Full-Time Nanny Available Late June 2017

Hello:  We are moving out of the area and unfortunately this means that our INCREDIBLE nanny needs to find a new employer.  She has been indispensable to us since she began looking after our daughter over 3 years ago. She now takes care of both our daughter and 9-month-old son.

There aren’t enough adjectives in the English language to describe how incredible she is, and we feel indebted to her tremendously.  Other than vacation, our many hasn’t had more than one or two sick days in 3+ years, and the love and adoration that our kids have for her is telling.

We are moving out of the area on June 19th, and would love to help her find a new loving family to be a part of.  Please email me directly if you would like more information ([email protected]).

An Interview with Joanne Johnson, Director of the new and growing Kiddie Academy, Educational Child Care in Hamilton Park, NJ

Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park, NJ

When did Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park open its doors:

Our Hamilton Park location opened in July of 2016.  It has been a wonderful experience for us so far! The community has been so warm and welcoming. We love seeing our neighbors, and try to participate in as many community events as possible. It’s great to see our families out at the community events too. The majority of our families live right here in Hamilton Park! In NJ we have 4 sister sites including us; Hoboken, Hamilton Park, Florham Park and Secaucus. All of our centers are committed to providing exceptional experiences for our students and their families. While Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park may be a brand new facility, the company is grounded in roots stemming back 36 years, making us Downtown Jersey City’s newest childcare, with the oldest roots!

Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park, NJ

How many classrooms do you have here:

We have 10 classrooms and also have an indoor gymnasium.

What are the age groups of children enrolled:

We have a broad age range. We start with children as young as six weeks of age and go through Kindergarten for full time care. We also accommodate children up to the age of twelve. The older children come for winter breaks, spring breaks, before & after care and summer camp.  To secure a space, families may enroll for any age group as far as two years in advance. We do not require an application. Families can simply call in and learn about availability free of charge. We strive to make our operations as convenient as possible for our families.

What is your teacher/child ratio in your classrooms:

Our ratios vary based on the specific age group. We follow all NJ state regulations.

Do you provide an option for catered lunch:

We have a commercial kitchen at our facility.  We provide, breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack & low fat and whole milk (certified organic). Meals are prepared fresh daily using all natural, organic ingredients. For our student’s safety, the school is nut free. In the event of a student allergy and/or preference, our catering company will create meals for the child that meet their dietary restrictions.

Do you have early drop off and after care options available:

Our operating hours are from 7am through 6.30pm. Families enjoy the benefit of being able to bring their children here anytime during those hours without incurring additional charges. This is a tremendous advantage for working families that can at times have unreliable schedules or face commuting delays. By offering unrestricted schedules throughout our operating hours, we have enabled our families to use our services without fear of unnecessary late fees and avoid commuting stress.

What kind of curriculum do you follow:

Our curriculum called is called Life Essentials and is based on the 4 Pillars of Learning. Those pillars are: Technology, Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum, Character Education and Health & Fitness. The curriculum is written and developed at our corporate headquarters in Maryland and is overseen by our Curriculum Advisory Board. Board members, Dr.Rivkin, Dr. Wheeler, Dr. Rogowsky and Dr. Watson-Thompson work collaboratively to evaluate and refresh our curriculum. Refreshed curriculums are piloted for a year at a corporately owned school prior to being rolled out to our centers. This ensures that it is as finely tuned as possible by the time it comes to us.

Each teacher is able to enhance the curriculum to meet the needs and interests of their current students. Having this flexibility enables us to provide an experience that is tailored to our current student body.  Additionally, children from 6 weeks – 2 years of age receive an individualized lesson plan that is unique to them. To ensure that we are continuing to develop plans that meet our students needs and support their learning, our faculty complete developmental checklists and compile student portfolios for each child. We offer live streaming webcams in all classrooms, so parents can log in and watch as their child learns and explores! Also included are electronic daily student reports so parents are always aware of what happened during their child’s day.

What extracurricular activities do you offer:

We incorporate Spanish and American Sign Language into our curriculum. Additionally, we enhance our curriculum with a Music program called Kindermusik. Our older students also enjoy the benefits of having technology in their classrooms. Whether it’s a smart table, computer, or touch screen smart board, we teach our students how to interact with technology in a purposeful way that will support their understanding and engagement with these tools.

Do you offer a Summer Camp program:

Absolutely! All existing students are automatically enrolled in our Summer Camp. Children from the community can also enroll in the camp program. Summer camp is broken down by age group and is geared towards students 2 years through 12 years of age. Campers will experience a summer like no other! Campers enjoy field trips, camp activities and splash days! We are thrilled to launch our brand new Biological Sciences Experience this summer! Campers will have an opportunity to learn about, handle and interact with real specimens brought right to their classroom. Sharks, stingray, turtle, starfish, insects and reptiles are all of the list to be explored this summer at Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park! Enrollment is open to the community right now and will end once all spots have been filled. We urge interested families to enroll as soon as possible as space is limited.

What would you like to say to our families:

We are thrilled to be part of the community and invite you in to learn more about the services we offer. At Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park, we are a community within a community! Many of our families have developed bonds and friendships through the school which has intern enhanced their experience living in Hamilton Park.  Our multicultural school population offers students a richly diverse learning experience that exposes them to a world beyond downtown. Our State of the Art Facility has been designed to optimally meet the needs of our student body. Our learning environment, makes the school an idyllic place for students to learn and families to come together. Our award winning faculty is at the heart of everything we do! They are among the top talent of early childhood educators in our area. We simply cannot say enough about them!  Additionally, a member of our leadership team is always on site to ensure the appropriate operations of the school and that our families always have a supervisor available to them.

We invite you to come learn more about the services we offer through a personal tour of the facility. For your convenience, tours are offered M-F 7am-6:30pm. We look forward to showing you our difference!

NANNY SHARE IN JOURNAL SQUARE?

Hello! Does anyone have a nanny they love and interest in sharing her services starting May 1, part-time to full-time? Our daughter is 17 months and on the waitlist for daycare, so we are looking for a solution in the interim (but if it works out well, could be more permanent). We live on JFK close to Saint Peter’s, and would be happy to drop off our girl at your place with her own food and diapers (could also provide her pack n’ play for napping), so your little one’s routine would be minimally affected. And hopefully he or she will make a new friend along the way, while you also get the benefit of saving a bit on childcare. We can give you references and answer any other questions, as well. Would also appreciate references for you and your nanny. If this sounds like something that might work for you, please shoot me an email: [email protected] Or if you have any recs for other childcare solutions, let me know. Thank you!

Jillian Hernandez Spells Out the Success of The Brunswick School

Meet Jillian Hernandez, the owner of The Brunswick School, which accepts children from 6 months through Kindergarten.

Jillian Hernandez from The Brunswick School

JCF: Tell me about yourself. What’s your background?

Jillian Hernandez: I guess I’m Jersey through and through. I grew up in Hudson County. I went to school at Rutgers, got my MBA there. My background is in Human Resources — I have about 15 years experience in the field.

JCF: Running a school seems like a big change!

Jillian Hernandez: When I told my ex-employer what I was planning on doing, they were all shocked. But it’s a beautiful business to be in. I saw the tremendous need in this area for quality preschools and I knew with my passion for education and commitment to the community, I would do a great job.

JCF: Did you do a lot of work to the building?

Jillian Hernandez: This was already school – it was a preschool until June 2014. We started construction in July of 2014, opened in July 2015. This building was created in the 1950s. They don’t build them like this anymore. My dad was the general contractor and I always say he put a lot of love into renovating this school.  We definitely have a homey vibe and it’s because of the people who built and who help run it.

JCF: The babies are so cute. How old are the little ones?

Jillian Hernandez: Six months to six years old. Once a child turns six months, they’ve updated their repertoire. It’s kind of fun. At 6 months, most children are able to sit up on their own. They are eating purees, our chef purees fresh organic fruits and vegetables.

JCF: Did you say chef?

Jillian Hernandez: Yes. Our chef is Busy Bee Organics (busybeeorganics.com). I believe in providing healthy, organic, well-balanced meals for children. You can make such an impact on their palates — clean food makes for clean palates. We have whole grain mac and cheese, homemade pizza, our snacks are usually a fruit or vegetable – whatever’s fresh and in season. It tastes delicious. We also offer vegetarian options.

JCF: Is there a particular curriculum you follow?

Jillian Hernandez: We’re loosely based on the creative curriculum – we use music, dance, movement. We have certified instructors who come to the school  and teach yoga once a week, zumba once a week… My director and teachers all help develop the lesson plans and individualize them as necessary for the children – we all make a good team!

Jillian Hernandez from The Brunswick SchoolJCF: Do they get outside?

Jillian Hernandez: We have a great outdoor play area and garden area.  While we have great parks in Jersey City, it’s more convenient and safer to stay on our property.

JCF: Tell me about the teachers. What makes them fantastic?

Jillian Hernandez: So many things. They know how to adjust the curriculum based on each child. They’re caring and nurturing. Children need love and compassion. Also all our head teachers have at least a Bachelors degree in early education or related field.  Many of them are even striving towards their masters. The important element is that they all have a real passion for their profession.

JCF: Sounds like you have a great thing going here. What advice would you give your younger self?

Jillian Hernandez: Look at every opportunity as a stepping stone. Don’t take anything for granted. It will all make sense some day.

5 tips on How to evaluate a school

Google it.

pre school in Jersey City day care in Jersey City

We live in the age of the internet. Any time you sign your kid up for anything all, you should be first looking on the internet for clues about the school’s reputation. Do they have a website? If they do, check it out – what’s on it? Does it look professional?

If the website is the window to the program, how are they presenting themselves to the world? If they don’t have a website, does that tell you something about the way they choose to communicate? Take it all in.

Ask the moms.

pre school inJersey City day care in Jersey City

Being in contact with other moms is essential to our survival as a species – and I mean that both in the jokey way but also in an I’m-not- kidding-at- all way. None of us can do this on our own. Ask other moms (online or in person) what experiences they’ve had at this school, or that daycare, or with program you’re interested in. Ask for suggestions.

Pass by the school.

Walk, bike, or drive by the school. Do this in the morning, when people are going in.

Do it during the day, do it at pick up time. Notice what’s happening. Is there chaos? Trust your gut – do these adults look like they know what they’re doing? Would you be comfortable letting your kid loose here?

Tour the school.

Find a time when you can go to the school to tour it. When you’re touring, observe not just with your eyes, but with your instincts too. Hone in – remember your gut. Visually you’re looking for cleanliness, happy and engaged children, organization of toys and equipment, multiple adults paying attention to and/or moving around with children.

BE FLEXIBLE.

Allow yourself to be impressed or disappointed – especially if your expectation was to be impressed or disappointed. Remember that no school has rainbows shooting out of its roof, so don’t set your expectations impossibly high. On the flip side, if you feel uncomfortable with a place (even if everyone else says its wonderful) don’t choose that place. And if you do choose the wrong place, allow yourself the flexibility to switch.

A Snapshot Of The Scandinavian School of Jersey City

The Scandinavian School of Jersey City

Location:

210 9th Street

Jersey City, 07306

(917) 536-7911

School hours: Monday through Friday 8.30am-4pm. They offer an extended day program from 4pm-5:30pm

The Scandinavian School of Jersey City  is the first full day Scandinavian inspired educational institution of it’s kind. Educating students from the ages of 1½  to 6, the curriculum is based on the inquisitive and creative nature of children at this age. Learning is project based and culture is an integral part of the curriculum and instruction: both English and Scandinavian are taught as languages.

The school was founded in 2010 by Maria Germerud-Sharp and focuses on the Scandinavian educational approach which is feeding students organic food, valuing childhood, stressing the importance of democracy, and incorporating more outdoor activities in the daily schedule. The curriculum includes  literacy, numeracy, science, art, music and technology.

Ongoing observations, documentations, and reports are made by teachers in order to convey to parents their child’s progress, success, and problem areas. In the classrooms, teachers facilitate ongoing discussions of inquiry and incorporate learning with play. Moreover, the students are often put into small groups when working on in class assignments.
