Shelters for Women and families in Jersey City

Shelters for women and families in Jersey city

Alarming at this may sound, over half a million people in the united states live on the streets, in cars, in homeless shelters, or in subsidized transitional housing. This number will significantly increase if we were to factor families that spend couple of days a year in such places. This is a real , daunting and an ongoing issue. Homelessness is real and thus we bring a list of shelters for women and families in Jersey city.

Homelessness is the condition of people lacking “a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence”. Causes of homelessness in the US include lack of affordable housing, mental illness, physical disability, having no family or supportive relatives, substance abuse, unemployment, and low-paying jobs etc. Homelessness in the United States affects many segments of the population, including families and children.

For women in particular, domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness. According to certain reports, the top causes of homelessness among families are: (1) lack of affordable housing, (2) unemployment, (3) poverty, and (4) low wages, in that order. Needless to say that a certain population of Jersey city is also homeless. And thus, this list of shelters for women and families in Jersey City is important. Alternatively if you are looking for charitable organizations, follow this list.

Many reasons why a family or someone we know finds themselves gripped by homelessness. In such times its imperative to find a safe facility.Below is the list of shelters for women and families in Jersey City, with their contribution to the community and  their missions .

Composting in Jersey City – How it works and how to get started

Composting in Jersey City – How it works and how to get started

Did you know that 40% of all food in America is wasted? By separating food for composting, participants are often more conscious of food waste and make a more concerted effort to only buy what they know they are going to use, saving money on groceries. If you’re curious about Composting in Jersey City – How it works and how to get started, you’ve come to the right place!

How does composting work?

Composting is the process of recycling organic materials, such as food scraps, wood waste and dried yard trimmings. Furthermore, it’s a controlled process that requires the right mix of greens (nitrogen rich materials aka your food scraps) and browns (carbon rich materials aka wood chips, paper products or dried leaves), oxygen and water. Finally, the result is compost, commonly referred to as black gold. It’s a dark, nutrient-rich soil amendment that smells earthy and has so many

Here’s a few of the benefits with composting:

1. Builds healthy soil
By using compost to improve the health of our soil, which grows the food that we eat, we’re restoring the quality of our food, and we’re keeping our family, our community and ourselves healthy!

2. Reduces greenhouse gas emissions
When food scraps and yard waste reach landfills, they don’t have the oxygen needed to break down properly and are forced to decompose without it. This process produces methane, a gas 20-30x more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

3. Reduces landfilled waste
According to the EPA, more food reaches landfills and incinerators than any other single material. The benefits keep going! Compost also helps fight erosion, improves water retention in soils and helps control plant diseases and pests, eliminating the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

They then pick up directly from your doorstep and leave a clean bucket every pick up.  They give back compost twice a year for your houseplants or garden, or you can opt to have your share donated to a local organization. Their fee is $29/month for weekly pick up and $19/month for biweekly pick up. You can sign up now at communitycompostco.com or contact them at [email protected] for more information!

Each bag of bran after the initial is $5 and participants typically purchase 1 bag of bran per month. If you are looking for more information, contact Tyler Randall: [email protected]

Family Promise of Hudson County Opens Its Doors

Family Promise of Hudson County Opens Its Doors to Serve Homeless Families in the Community : FamilyPromiseHudson.org

Family Promise of Hudson County, a new nonprofit providing temporary shelter to homeless families in the community, officially opened its doors. A local affiliate of a national nonprofit, Family Promise works to keep entire homeless families together by relying on places of worship, or host congregations, to provide shelter. All host congregations are currently based in Jersey City and Hoboken, with additional support from congregations in Hoboken and Bayonne.

“There are a number of organizations and programs that provide incredible support for the homeless in Hudson County,” explains Tiffany Kane, Executive Director of Family Promise of Hudson County. “However, there are few offerings for homeless families that allow the entire family to find shelter and services together. Through Family Promise’s unique shelter model, children will be able to remain in their schools, parents can remain at their jobs, and entire families will be able to receive services through our case management and support system.”

Each night, families will stay at one of Family Promise of Hudson County’s host congregations. Each day, they will travel to the Family Promise drop-in center, located at Fountain of Salvation Church in Jersey City. There, families will receive services to ensure they get back on their feet, which will include counseling, connections to local resources (such as health care), and housing assistance.

The community welcomed Family Promise of Hudson County with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony on February 22, 2018, at Fountain of Salvation Church. After remarks from Executive Director Tiffany Kane, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Romano, and Caroline Caulfield, Correspondence Coordinator for U.S. Senator Cory Booker, the ribbon was cut to officially offer services to homeless families.

In front of local community leaders, including elected officials, host and support congregation representatives and other friends, Family Promise of Hudson County announced that CarePoint Health will be its exclusive healthcare partner.

“CarePoint has been actively involved in Hoboken and Jersey City in working to provide health care services to the homeless community, however, families at risk of homelessness do not always have the network or services available to help them,” says Peter Daniels, Chief Operating Officer of CarePoint Health“When we heard about Family Promise and the work they will be doing in the community, we immediately wanted to get involved as health care partners to help reach this often overlooked community.”

Who We Are: Family Promise of Hudson County is a non-profit that will

help to house homeless families within Hudson County.

What We Do: In addition to providing emergency sheltering, we will also provide case management and connection to resources. Our goal is to help families find sustainable and successful housing solutions.

Why We Do It: Currently, there is no other emergency shelter in Hudson County that houses the whole family. Imagine a single father raising his children and he just can’t make ends meet. Currently, our area has no way to keep them together. A mother raising an adult son with disabilities would be separated because on paper, they are single adults. Family Promise of Hudson County will be able to keep these families together and can work with them to find a sustainable way back on their feet.

What are we fundraising for? Everything from cots, cribs and car seats must be purchased. We will be hiring a full time case manager and case aides to work with families. We will also be providing bus and train tickets as well as school supplies and food for families. The cost is high, but our emergency shelter model that shelters families in places of worship keeps other costs down. If you consider donating or hosting a fundraiser, families in Hudson County will benefit directly. Donations are tax-deductible and may be matched by some places of business! Supporting Family Promise of Hudson County means that you will be helping families find their way from the street to a home of their own.

JCFamilies will be collecting supplies for this shelter in all the upcoming events in Jersey City.
