List of Summer Camps in Jersey City

JCFamilies has the most trusted directory of summers camps serving Jersey City, Hoboken and the surrounding areas.  We have assembled a list of the best options for children of all ages, abilities and interests.
The camps in our directory range from local schools and activity centers with diverse activities for campers, to more singular-focused camps (dance, STEM, robotics, soccer, tennis, swimming), to the more classic summer camps which are located out in the county.  All camps outside of the metro area provide transportation from/to JC/Hoboken.
Use this directory to find full day and 1/2 day options for your little campers.  Whether you’re looking for a few days a week, a few weeks of the summer, or the whole summer, you can find what you’re looking for here.

Choosing A Camp for your child ? Camp Riverbend

Summer Camp In Jersey City NJ
Building Self-Esteem at Camp : Camp Riverbend

One of the most important gifts a child can be given is a sense of confidence in himself or herself; the knowledge that he or she will be able to meet a new challenge.  Camp is a key place for children to succeed and acquire this fundamental skill!

While we don’t provide academic instruction at Camp Riverbend, our campers are learning and growing every day.  Of course children learn a lot at school, but in school children are constantly graded and evaluated in many ways.  At camp, however, children can try a host of new things, without having to worry if they “make the grade.”  This freedom, to experiment in a safe environment, is a major building block of confidence.

Summer Camp In Jersey City NJ Camp RiverbendWith a range of activities available at camp, kids have many opportunities to explore.  Campers are taught the skills to meet physical challenges, like climbing to the top of the high ropes tower or being able to pass our Deep Water Test.  They are given opportunities to explore their creativity while decorating a clay pot or playing rhythm games in performance.  Campers can cook an unfamiliar dish and learn to appreciate new tastes and flavors.  And even when changing for swim, campers are learning how to take care of their possessions and clean up after themselves–surely a very useful skill, parents will agree!

Summer Camp In Jersey City NJ Camp RiverbendOne of the most important ways to build confidence is by meeting new peers and making new friends. Camp is a great place for children to expand their social circles in a relaxed way, as they spend days together swimming, playing and having fun.

Our counselors are great mentors and a crucial force in helping campers succeed.  Counselors can directly teach campers new skills (like how to make a bounce pass in basketball) but there are other important skills that they are teaching indirectly through their encouragement and support.  As counselors encourage campers to keep trying, children learn persistence.  As counselors cheer on a camper’s achievements, children learn to trust themselves.  What an amazing gift!

5 tips on How to evaluate a school

Google it.

pre school in Jersey City day care in Jersey City

We live in the age of the internet. Any time you sign your kid up for anything all, you should be first looking on the internet for clues about the school’s reputation. Do they have a website? If they do, check it out – what’s on it? Does it look professional?

If the website is the window to the program, how are they presenting themselves to the world? If they don’t have a website, does that tell you something about the way they choose to communicate? Take it all in.

Ask the moms.

pre school inJersey City day care in Jersey City

Being in contact with other moms is essential to our survival as a species – and I mean that both in the jokey way but also in an I’m-not- kidding-at- all way. None of us can do this on our own. Ask other moms (online or in person) what experiences they’ve had at this school, or that daycare, or with program you’re interested in. Ask for suggestions.

Pass by the school.

Walk, bike, or drive by the school. Do this in the morning, when people are going in.

Do it during the day, do it at pick up time. Notice what’s happening. Is there chaos? Trust your gut – do these adults look like they know what they’re doing? Would you be comfortable letting your kid loose here?

Tour the school.

Find a time when you can go to the school to tour it. When you’re touring, observe not just with your eyes, but with your instincts too. Hone in – remember your gut. Visually you’re looking for cleanliness, happy and engaged children, organization of toys and equipment, multiple adults paying attention to and/or moving around with children.

BE FLEXIBLE.

Allow yourself to be impressed or disappointed – especially if your expectation was to be impressed or disappointed. Remember that no school has rainbows shooting out of its roof, so don’t set your expectations impossibly high. On the flip side, if you feel uncomfortable with a place (even if everyone else says its wonderful) don’t choose that place. And if you do choose the wrong place, allow yourself the flexibility to switch.

The Transition Process – School to Summer Camp

With the school year about to end, many parents are looking in to summer camps for their children. Depending on the temperament of your child this can be a rather exciting time or a very anxious one. While some children adapt more easily to change than others, structure and routine provide a sense of security to all children. Therefore, if children aren’t prepared, any deviation from their “normal day” can be stressful and lead to some form of mild anxiety that manifests in behavioral changes. Look out for excessive clinging, irritability, frequent tantrums, unwarranted crying spells, and less sociability.

In order to ensure a smooth transition, children need to be well prepared. This is particularly important for younger kids who cannot fully comprehend the change. Before the end of the school year, mark the last day of school on a calendar and talk to your child about what to expect over the summer. Give them an opportunity to tell you how they feel about the end of the year: their friends might be moving away, they might be worried about going to a new school, or they might even be relieved that the year is over. Mark the occasion with some sort of special but simple event, for example: have your child make a card for their teacher and/or their friends or, create a folder of their schoolwork or pictures from the year and look over it together. (These activities are symbolic and work well with children as young as 2 years old). Shield your child from your own anxiousness or nostalgia and keep farewells simple.

Familiarize your child with the new environment before dropping them off. Have your child visit the new school and meet with the new teachers. Walk around with them and show them the important areas of the classroom: the cubbies, the bathroom, the library etc. Point out toys and books that he or she likes to play with. Speak to the new teachers about your child’s preferences and habits. If possible, arrange play dates with children who will be with your child. Younger children benefit from a transition object; it could be a favorite toy (which they can leave in their cubby) or the blanket they used for naptime in their previous class.

At home, keep changes to a minimum. Parents tend be more laidback during summer because the children are out of school. However, it’s important to continue with a familiar routine to maintain normalcy for the children, particularly around nap time, bed time and meals. Too many changes at once can be overwhelming for young children. Spend time reading books about goodbyes, moving and going to a new school. Stories can provide opportunities for children to process their feelings and talk about their worries with you.

Perhaps, most importantly, be available to your child. As long as their foundations are stable, they will feel grounded and overcome any challenges during these times of transition.
