Cupcake Liner Cards for Mom | Time to Create with Lady Lucas

Mother’s Day is around the corner {May 11, 2014} and these cards make the perfect sentimental statement using a very simple item that can be found in most kitchen cupboards. After making cupcake liner art with my students this month, I realized they enjoyed it so much, it might make a great Mother’s Day craft for May!

This craft is great for very young children and older kids all the way up to the tween years. You can easily add layers of difficulty to the art. The examples here are perfect for children ages 3.5 – 7 years.

Materials you will need:

  • Cupcake liners, also known as ‘baking cups’ in assorted colors and patterns

  • Sturdy construction paper or card stock

  • White glue

  • Markers, crayons and/or colored pencils

1 Fold heavy construction paper in half for a large card. You can also buy pre-cut and folded greeting cards at most arts and craft supply stores in assorted colors. A.C. Moore carries a nice assortment of these.

2 Plan the design you’d like to make on your card. Pictured above are some sweet, smiling flowers that are super simple to make. Other ideas would be a picture of mom or even a nice butterfly.

3 Using white glue, attach your chosen cupcake liners to the front of the card. You can leave them ‘as is’ to make cute flowers, or fold them in half to make a pretty skirt. You can also fold them into quarters {in half and then in half again} to form frilly butterfly wings.

4 Use markers, crayons and colored pencils to add details such as faces or dots on the cupcake liners and to the front of the card.

5 Don’t forget to add a special message to inside of your card! Younger children will need an adult’s help with this, but elementary aged boys and girls can have a fun time practicing writing inside. They can even copy a sweet poem from a poetry book as a special message to mom.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!
