Gumdrop People | Time to Create with Lady Lucas

Gumdrop People Craft

Moms, this craft is a special one for me, because I’ve been making these adorable gumdrop people for years, and no matter how old I get, the thrill of seeing them come alive never gets old! These cute creations are a great idea for children over 5 years old, but younger tots will enjoy watching you make them. From set up to finish, making gumdrop guys & gals takes about 30 minutes.

Materials you will need:

  • Gumdrops {small spice drops work best}

  • Assorted soft candies

  • A small tube of icing

  • Honey

  • Tiny nonpareil sprinkles

  • Assorted shape sprinkles like stars or hearts

  • Round, wooden toothpicks

  • A butter knife

1 Gather all your materials on the kitchen counter. Pour gumdrops and other candies on a plate to make the process move a little faster!

2 Break one tip of of a wooden toothpick and ‘thread’ three gumdrops on the remaining toothpick for the gumdrop person’s body. *The breaking of toothpicks should be done only by older children or adults to avoid splinters!

3 Using a butter knife, slice the top off of a gumdrop for a hat. Slice a few tiny pieces off of another gumdrop and roll between your fingers to create little hands. Add these hands to two broken toothpicks and insert as arms into the gumdrop person. Use a dab of icing to attach the hat to your gumdrop person and another dab of icing if you’d like a ‘base’ for your person. I used a square shaped piece of candy for my pink base.

4 Put a dab of honey on the face of your gumdrop person to attach a face. I’ve used colored non parallels to make eyes, a nose and a mouth. You can find these little circular sprinkles in the bakery aisle of any grocery store.

5 Use either honey or icing to attach any remaining decorations on your gumdrop people, such as buttons or hat ornaments.

Other variations for this project would be to use an edible pen for details instead of sprinkles. Gumdrops are very pliable, almost like clay, so encourage the kids to have fun slicing the candies to make all sorts of creations like cats, dogs or even snowmen.
