The Waldo School, World of ABC in Jersey City

school in Jersey CityAn Interview with Founders, Daniela Sarbu & Dorota Mani And Curriculum Director, Courtney Bode

Located in the heart of the Waldo section of the Jersey City Waterfront, World of ABC, The Waldo School sets the standard for leading private education.

What inspired you to open The Waldo School, World of ABC:

Our inspiration were our children. We are two mommies who were looking for schools for both of our children. There were not many then as there are right now. We were looking for something different than what we had in the area. A school that was academically advanced but with a well rounded curriculum, with inspirational facilities that were green, sustainable and eco friendly too. We wanted chess, music, etiquette; multiple things that we could not find in the schools that were currently in the area.

We opened our doors in 2010. We found a space that was completely raw and we helped design it. We were almost at 80% capacity in our first year only. Most families enrolled here are from close neighborhoods in downtown Jersey City.

Private schools in jersey cityWhat kind of curriculum do you follow & how is it different from other schools in the area:

We use the International Baccalaureate program. It is a primary years program for kids from Pre-K to Highschool. The idea here is to promote inquiry based approach to teaching where kids are encouraged to ask questions and we use these learnings to develop a lot of our lesson plans and activities.

It’s a very student centric approach driven by the children’s’ interest. They are really invested in what they’re learning. Simultaneously we are also a little more academic than other schools. While following their interests we are also making sure we deliver targeted mathematics, language and arts, science instruction so the kids are not only learning what they are expected to know but a little more too. We also have smaller classes with lower ratios so students get the individual instruction that they need.

It’s important to add here that our children are a year ahead with their current programs, but because we make our approach fun, exciting and innovative, they s don’t even know that they are learning so much!

pre-schools in jersey cityWhat extracurricular activities do you offer:

In addition to academics we believe that a child needs to be well rounded socially, emotionally and physically and because of that we offer a range of extracurricular activities that are included in our tuition. Music, swimming (with a salt water system), basketball, soccer, Spanish, art, robotics, chess are all programs that are part of our curriculum from 8.30am – 3.30pm. For extra coaching in these areas, we offer private lessons too.

Students enjoy an indoor pool and gymnasium for physical education or indoor recess.

We are in the process of opening our outdoor space in June with chess tables, hoops, picnic tables etc.

pre-k in Jersey CityWhat is the student/teacher ratio in your school:

Our program runs from Infant – 3rd grade and every year we plan to open a new classroom as our kids are growing with us. In general, each classroom has about 12 students. Our ratios are as follows:

1:3 in Infants and Toddlers

1:6 in Pre-K

1:12 in KG & Up

Do you have early drop off and after care options available:

Our school day runs from 7.30am -6.00pm.

daycares in Jersey City

Do you provide an option for catered lunch:

We ask parents to send lunch for their kids with instructions as needed. However for parents who would like to order lunch through us, we do work with a chef who delivers meals for kids daily to our facilities. This is not included in the tuition

We do however, offer a snack at 10.00am and 3.30pm for all kids. We take into consideration all dietary restrictions.

private school in Jersey CityDo you offer summer camp programs:

We have two summer camp programs. One program for preschoolers and second one for kindergartners and up.

Our Pre-K program is fun. A great introduction to school for kids who are new. We include academics but with summer there is a lot of outdoor time, sports and different theme based activities that we plan our days around. Interested parents can see detail on our website www.worldofabc.com.

The Elementary summer program is based on STEM so includes robotics, programing, engineering, math and science in addition to sports as well.

We open summer camp to not just the enrolled children but all kids of jersey city and beyond. Summer camp is also a good introduction for new students that are starting in September. They get acquainted with the premises and the teachers which makes for a very smooth transition for them.

elementary school in Jersey CityWhat makes you different from other schools in the area:

This school is being run by two mommies. We are not a business. We are a facility that is a home away from home for our children. They are all happy and excited. Yes, we are challenging them academically in addition to a wide range of extracurriculars but they are also learning self confidence and getting a well rounded experience.

We are also blessed with really good teachers and not to mention exceptional students! It’s important to have all the right degrees but we also choose good teachers based on their interaction with kids in the classroom.

What would you like to say to our families:

Come and see us. Our doors are always open! We make sure all our children are safe and getting the well rounded experience they need. We do everything in our power to nurture successful individuals with a strong foundation.

It is also important to note that we have a very experienced nurse on our staff at all times too.

We conduct tours for all parents on Mondays and Thursdays from 4pm-5pm. We prefer more intimate tours with fewer families on a given day so that we are able to give them more time to ask questions and listen to their concerns.

Our admissions process is also on a rolling basis. We accept applications all year around and revert to families within 3 business days on availability and next steps. We believe in open communication and transparency!

The French American Academy, Jersey City, NJ

An Interview with Jean-François, Center Director, The French American Academy, Jersey City, NJ

The French American Academy, Jersey City, NJ is located in downtown Jersey City and walking distance from Grove Street Path Station. The French American Academy opened in the former St Mary High School. Their charming 3-story building, offers 30 classrooms with bright light, warm colors and ample space. We were warmly greeted by their faculty and students. A special thank you to their center director, Jean-François, for giving us his time.

When did The French American Academy of Jersey City open it’s doors:

This school is part of a group of schools called the French American Academy founded 10 years ago. The French American Academy first opened three Pre-K classes in September 2007 in Dumont, NJ. The school has grown ever since.

We moved to a bigger campus in New Milford in Bergen County in July 2010 and shortly after  opened a second campus in Morris Plains in Morris County in September 2010. The Jersey City campus opened its doors in 2012.

Private school in jersey city

What kind of curriculum do you follow & how is it different from other schools in the area:

The French American Academy of Jersey City is a private bilingual school. We offer an early-start, gradual immersion, dual language (French and English) education to students from Pre-K2 through 4th grade. From Sep 2017, we are expanding to 5th grade.

In Sep 2018 we will open the Middle school in Jersey City with 6th, 7th and 8th grades with French, American & Spanish tracks. We will be accepting students from various international backgrounds and communities.

There is more emphasis on the French language in the early years (Pre-K-Kindergarten) to set up the foundations. From 1st grade, instruction in English gradually increases and by 5th grade children are spending about 60% in French and 40% in English.

Bilingualism is at the core of our curriculum and in some classes like in science, students are taught in both languages with both an American and a French teacher present in the classrooms. It’s a demanding bilingual curriculum with an emphasis on projects and investigation. In our community, we welcome children from families whether these families speak French at home, or English or another language.

Our school is accredited by both, Middle School Association on College and Schools, and the National French Ministry of Education, and is a member of New Jersey Association of Independent School.

When did Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park open its doors:

Our Hamilton Park location opened in July of 2016.  It has been a wonderful experience for us so far! The community has been so warm and welcoming. We love seeing our neighbors, and try to participate in as many community events as possible. It’s great to see our families out at the community events too. The majority of our families live right here in Hamilton Park! In NJ we have 4 sister sites including us; Hoboken, Hamilton Park, Florham Park and Secaucus. All of our centers are committed to providing exceptional experiences for our students and their families. While Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park may be a brand new facility, the company is grounded in roots stemming back 36 years, making us Downtown Jersey City’s newest childcare, with the oldest roots!

We do not require an application. Families can simply call in and learn about availability free of charge. We strive to make our operations as convenient as possible for our families.

This is a tremendous advantage for working families that can at times have unreliable schedules or face commuting delays. By offering unrestricted schedules throughout our operating hours, we have enabled our families to use our services without fear of unnecessary late fees and avoid commuting stress.

Day cares jersey cityWhat kind of curriculum do you follow:

Our curriculum called is called Life Essentials and is based on the 4 Pillars of Learning. Those pillars are: Technology, Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum, Character Education and Health & Fitness. The curriculum is written and developed at our corporate headquarters in Maryland and is overseen by our Curriculum Advisory Board. Board members, Dr.Rivkin, Dr. Wheeler, Dr. Rogowsky and Dr. Watson-Thompson work collaboratively to evaluate and refresh our curriculum. Refreshed curriculums are piloted for a year at a corporately owned school prior to being rolled out to our centers. This ensures that it is as finely tuned as possible by the time it comes to us.

Each teacher is able to enhance the curriculum to meet the needs and interests of their current students. Having this flexibility enables us to provide an experience that is tailored to our current student body.  Additionally, children from 6 weeks – 2 years of age receive an individualized lesson plan that is unique to them. To ensure that we are continuing to develop plans that meet our students needs and support their learning, our faculty complete developmental checklists and compile student portfolios for each child. We offer live streaming webcams in all classrooms, so parents can log in and watch as their child learns and explores! Also included are electronic daily student reports so parents are always aware of what happened during their child’s day.

What extracurricular activities do you offer:

We incorporate Spanish and American Sign Language into our curriculum. Additionally, we enhance our curriculum with a Music program called Kindermusik. Our older students also enjoy the benefits of having technology in their classrooms. Whether it’s a smart table, computer, or touch screen smart board, we teach our students how to interact with technology in a purposeful way that will support their understanding and engagement with these tools.

Do you offer a Summer Camp program:

Absolutely! All existing students are automatically enrolled in our Summer Camp. Children from the community can also enroll in the camp program. Summer camp is broken down by age group and is geared towards students 2 years through 12 years of age. Campers will experience a summer like no other! Campers enjoy field trips, camp activities and splash days! We are thrilled to launch our brand new Biological Sciences Experience this summer! Campers will have an opportunity to learn about, handle and interact with real specimens brought right to their classroom. Sharks, stingray, turtle, starfish, insects and reptiles are all of the list to be explored this summer at Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park! Enrollment is open to the community right now and will end once all spots have been filled. We urge interested families to enroll as soon as possible as space is limited.

What would you like to say to our families:

Quick Points:

  • The Brunswick School in Jersey City is conveniently located in downtown JC, 2 blocks from Hamilton Park.
  • Huge parking lot for parents.
  • Citibike stand just opposite to the school.

An Interview with Jillian Hernandez; Founder of the new and growing Brunswick School

How did the Brunswick School come about? What inspired you?

We opened a year and a half ago in July of 2015. Obviously I have a passion for children in early education but my background is in Human Resources so I wanted to start a business that could make a difference in the community. I spend most of my time interacting with the teachers and making sure they are happy. If teachers are happy, children are happy and as a result parents are happy. The teachers here have a true passion for what they do…I wish I could spend more time in the classroom…but the highlight of my day is when one of the teachers brings a couple of kids in here and shows me what they’ve done.

I also recognized that there was a huge demand in this area for quality education. There are so many young families here now in Jersey City. At the time when we started building the school there were not many options…now fortunately there are a lot more options for the community which is great, as it will bring more people to Jersey City.

What is the teacher/child ratio in your school:

Under 18 mths: 1:4, 18mths – 2.5: 1:6, 2.5 & older: 1:10

But we always have extra hands and staff too.

How many classrooms do u have in the school:

We have 11 classrooms and in the process of opening up an additional classroom and indoor playroom coming very soon. This used to be a catholic grammar school, so its nice that we can continue to expand into additional spaces that already exist within the building.

Our program starts at 6 months up to Kindergarten. We have two baby rooms, three young toddler rooms, four older toddler rooms, One Pre-K room and One Kindergarten room.

Do you provide an option for catered lunch:

Yes! Our chef is fantastic. She provides breakfast, lunch and snacks to the children. It’s all organic and super healthy (it’s busy bee organics). It’s included in the tuition.

We also teach the children about what they are eating and why.

Do you have early drop off and after care options available:

We are open from 7 am – 7pm which is nice and convenient for parents that work and have to commute. Our core day starts at 8.30 am and ends at 4.30pm, but before that and after is before care and after care.

What kind of curriculum do you follow:

Our director Erin and I built the curriculum. We researched various different curriculums that are out there and created our own. We didn’t want to subscribe to one but take the best of all.

A lot of it is based on Arts & Crafts, Music, Movement but heavy on Academics (Math, Reading, Writing, Science, History) through utilizing different creative outlets. That’s our whole premise here..teaching the children to enjoy the process of learning. For the little ones it’s more about the socialization and maintaining a structure, trying to maintain the routine the parents have at home, here in the school.

What extracurricular activities do you offer:

The kids get Zumba and Yoga and the older kids have Science Enrichment once a week and Spanish a few times a week. We also have Rockasorri coming in once a week for Music. We also have an outdoor play area and we take them out twice a day.

Do you offer Summer Camp programs:

Yes, we do have a summer program. Most of the spots go to siblings that aren’t in the school. Our summer camp is separate from regular school. We have a separate classroom for summer and it’s more fun based with field trips, visits at Hudson Play etc. And the kids are older. Enrollment for camp is open and we ask for a two week minimum.

How do you foster Diversity?

We celebrate every holiday and ask parents to come in and celebrate with us. Our teachers are from different nationalities and backgrounds and they also help us carry things out like that.

In your opinion, what sets your school apart from others?

-We have the best teachers, they are just amazing human beings that care with great educational backgrounds and are certified.

-Our Food! These kids eat better than most of Jersey City! Super healthy and organic. The chef makes sure they are getting a balanced diet between what they like, fruits and vegetables. We also take care of dietary restrictions.

The curriculum is based on an image of the child as creative, capable and inquisitive. Children are placed at the center of curriculum negotiations, the belief being that they learn best when their interests are acknowledged as worthy of investigation. Adopting a child-centred approach results in an authentically responsive curriculum model that ensures a dynamic and vibrant teaching and learning environment. We believe that in both small and large groups children learn through sharing, discussing, questioning, reflecting and engaging with their peers.

All students feel valued because they are seen as active participants in their learning and because their opinions and thoughts matter. Teachers are guides and facilitators who know how to engage students by posing questions, making suggestions and supporting students when they want to delve further into a topic or new discovery. Innovative teaching practices allow for out-of-the box thinking. Students understand the purpose of being both creators and critical consumers of information that they see, read, and learn about in and out of school.

The program at GPC is based on the well-researched and well-proven educational philosophy of developmentally-appropriate practice. GPC faculty employ the developmental-interactive approach to teaching students as pioneered by the Bank Street Graduate School of Education in New York.

At Hudson Montessori School we work with, and show our students how to “make”, and provide them with possibilities and materials. We also have an assembly each week that offers them a forum for presenting their ideas and showing their peers and teachers what they have created. This is an essential step for the students to reflect on their work and receive valuable feedback for them to consider in their next project.

Every year, the entire school engages in a yearlong project that is theme based on a universal topic. Each theme we pick allows us to look at the world from a new perspective and from different angles. Every area of the curriculum is integrated in hands-on applications, such as combining math, science and language skills to figure out and document a solution to a problem.

Our definition of STEAM is not doing projects, or addressing each area of study in isolation, but through exploration of a topic where we integrate skills from every core area of the curriculum and use the scientific method. Using their skills in this way, students are able to reach a successful conclusion by combining their knowledge and experiences to learn and solve problems.

Extraordinarily high satisfaction levels were expressed by BelovED’s students, by their parents/guardians, and by the school’s teachers in year-end, online surveys that granted respondents complete anonymity.  High satisfaction is further reflected in BelovED’s exceedingly high student and faculty retention rate.

At BelovED Community Charter School, we are committed to your child, and we accept responsibility – “no excuses” – for helping your child develop the kind of values, skills, knowledge, confidence and character that will propel him or her to success in school, college, and career, and produce a happy, contributory life.

A key feature of the school is its caring school climate – a climate that makes students feel cared about and results in their caring about others, also. Children learn more when they love school – and children most often love school when they feel welcomed and cared for at school.

We combine our commitment to your child and our caring school climate with an education program that features a proven curriculum and instructional methodology.

Charter Schools In Jersey City

Sometimes a charter school is the best choice for your child and your family.  But with so many charter schools now in JC, how do you know which one to choose?  Although nothing can replace your own research and school visit, we’ve done a lot of the research for you.  JCFamilies has completed an extensive review of the most highly recommend charter schools and compiled our findings below.  We hope you find this helpful and informative.

Your 2018 Guide to Jersey City’s Most Recommended Charter Schools and Why You Should Enroll:

Charter Schools are an interesting concept- after all, they’re basically privately funded experimental educational programs.

Many parents are saying public schools are failing, and charter schools attempt to provide a solution for that. Of course, what will work for your child all depends on your needs, and you know your child’s needs best- only you can make the decision.
Parents have a tough job- they need to tour the facility, interview the director and get a feel for the teachers. That’s a lot of stressful work, but it’s a necessary and life changing decision for your child. That’s why we  have complied ultimate Guide to Jersey City’s Most Recommended Charter Schools. While charter schools get a bad rep due to some attempts failing in the past, because each charter school is different you shouldn’t let those rumors scare you off. Do your research and inform yourself as much as possible in order to make the best decision for your child.
Here we provide you with a list of Jersey City’s Charter schools to get you started.
The Ethical Community Charter School

The Ethical Community Charter School might be for you! This is a school that encourages as much student participation as possible; they encourage the students to ask questions and form their own opinions. This school takes advantage of the arts and uses it as a movement to integrate both fun and learning into one. They do a great job at mixing community into the learning aspect of the school. Some things you ought to
know right away? Admissions! The admission process for the 2014-2015 school year is currently open. The closing date for admissions is on January 7th, 2014. There will be a lottery held on Thursday January 16th at 7pm in the school cafeteria. The lottery is the way in which this school chooses the students for the following year, that way everyone has an equal opportunity. If you wish to apply to this school you can find the application form on their website (http://www.teccs-jc.org/).

Also, if before you apply you would prefer to pay the school a visit then no problem! The school hosts tours every Friday at 9:30 am by appointment. All you have to do is send an email to [email protected] or give them a phone call at (201)984-4151 and book your appointment.

The Ethical Community Charter School in Jersey City is a school open for children in Kindergarten to the eighth grade. The curriculum for each grade group is made up by focusing and mixing three different elements. In the curriculum the staff incorporates responsive learning, multidisciplinary core curriculum and project-based learning. This style of teaching can accomplish many goals academically within the same time. For example, while students are being taught about information in one subject that are simultaneously using and strengthening their writing skills. This is one of the main goals at the Ethical Community Center School.

As I mentioned before, the Ethical Community Charter School fully believes in teaching children not only to act responsibly and how to treat each other but what it means to have responsibility. They take it upon themselves to instill in each child the meanings and reasoning behind respect. Teachers will take classroom opportunities to create a teaching lesson; every moment counts right? And if you feel that you would like a little more of this ethics style program the Ethical Community Charter School in Jersey City also has a C.A.R.E (Contributing to the community, Achieving excellence, Respecting yourself and others, and Exhibiting self-control) program in place to take this ideal a step further.

At The Ethical Community Charter School in Jersey City they also feel strongly on child health. Because of this, the school has rid of all of their vending machines. They use the lunch program as an opportunity to teach and educate the students about healthy eating habits.

If you’re looking for a school that takes every opportunity available to them and the students to be turned into a learning experience then the Ethical Community Charter School just may be for you. It is a caring environment that places high values on respect. So feel free to visit their website or visit the school itself on any Friday. Just be sure to do it soon as the application deadlines for the next school year is coming up.

The Learning Community Charter School

The Learning Community Charter School is an independent public school located in Jersey City. The school is just a block away from Lincoln Park for those of you who would love a nearby park to take your little ones to. The Learning Community Charter School serves to educate children between the grades Pre-K through the 8th Grade. The Pre-K classes aim to have at most 15 students in each class and classes from Kindergarten to the 8th grade aim to have about 20 students in each class. Want to pay the school a visit for yourself? Feel free to stop by on Monday December 16th for a tour at 6 and 6:30. There is no need to RSVP. There will also be a later tour date available on  Friday, January 3rd at 9:30 and 10am.

The Admission process for the learning community charter school in Jersey City is done in a lottery style fashion. Applicants must apply to the school within the deadline. The lottery determines, at random, who is accepted to the school and who is placed on the waiting list. Those on the waiting list will be contacted once an opening occurs. If no response is made then the school will move on to the next person on the list. The list of applicants is refreshed every year, re-using the lottery method. Applications for the 2014-2015 school year are now being accepted at the Learning Community Charter School now up till Friday January 3rd at 3pm.

At the Learning Community Charter School in Jersey City both breakfast and lunch are made available at the school to the students. The calendar for what meals will be made available on a daily basis is up on the schools website (www.lccsnj.org) for the parents to download if interested. There is a calendar both for the breakfast menu and for the lunch menu to lessen any confusion. As in many schools, lunch is provided at a slight cost. The student breakfast cost $1.60. The student lunch comes at a little more of a cost, $3.00. Now, if you think you would qualify to receive free or reduced lunch there is an application link available on the website. The cost of the reduced breakfast is $0.30 and the cost for the reduced lunch is $0.40, so please do take advantage of the reduced/free meal option if it is available for you.

While looking at the curriculum and classes offered at the Learning Community Charter School I was sort of taken a back when I saw the extensive list. Many of the things offered are for sure not mandatory to be provided, which is great to see. It gives me the feeling that this school truly does care to give its students an experience that they will forever appreciate. Yes, the school of course offers English Language arts, math, science, physical education and social studies. But the courses that put an extra smile on my face were visual arts, wingspan arts (which is a non-profit program that all students from 5th grade to 8th grade engage in for an hour once a week exposing them to performing, visual, media and literary arts), hip hop elements, play at poetry, digital photography and graphic design (designs the yearbook), Afro- Caribbean drumming and step it up (where students learn to step; make rhythmic patterns using their hands and feet). There are so many options here for each child that wherever they choose to go they should learn, grow and most importantly experience something new to help them feel more comfortable or “at home” in their school.

You may be overwhelmed with all of the course options I just threw at you but be prepared for one more thing; the THINK TANK after school program at the learning community charter school. The think tank after school program is offered daily from 3:15-6 pm and from 12:20-6 pm on most half days. It is set in place for both activities and homework help. There are three sessions of this program each year and they do require a fee. If you or your child is interested in attending the after school program please contact the school for more information on how the payment works. They are willing to work with families who may not be able to afford the entire payment. No child left behind right? Also, students are allowed to do a one day drop in at the after school program but also at a charge; usually $18 but again, contact the school if this does not work for you and see what they can do. It never hurts to take the chance especially with a school that is willing to help.

The Learning Community Charter School sounding good for you so far? Don’t forget the applications are due by January 3rd! Also, remember you can drop into any of the upcoming tours on Monday December 16th and Friday January 3rd. Hope it is the school for you! Happy School Searching!

Golden Door Charter School

A school that focuses on the achievements of each child “no exceptions, no excuses”. Well then, it is time to talk about The Golden Door Charter School! The Golden Door Charter School is a school located on 3044 Kennedy Blvd. in Jersey City. So let’s talk about a bit of what Golden Door Charter School has to offer.

At Golden Door Charter School, they strive to provide parents and students with a safe and high quality learning environment for each and every student that attends. To get an idea of the curriculum in place at Golden Door, it is important to know that the lessons at Golden door follow the guidelines of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. This is to ensure that each child in every classroom is guaranteed a well-rounded education. To go a step further, Golden Door Charter School offers their students the chance to take a course in foreign language, music and art. They also offer health and physical education to instill in the minds of our young ones the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Want to know what grabbed me when checking out the Golden Door Charter School? Simple! The fact that accessing the specific curriculum available at the Golden Door Charter School is just a click away. On their website, the Golden Door Charter School has available the curriculum overviews. It is easy to find exact curriculum your child would be placed into. The links to each curriculum is divided by subject and by class grades; so simple! So if you would like to check out the class environment your child would be placed into please do visit their website at www.goldendoorschool.org . Simply click on the previous link and then on that page go to academics and then curriculum overviews. There you will see a list of each curriculum.

Next thing you should know about Golden Door Charter School is their uniform policy. At Golden Door they are very strict with uniforms. Each child is to come to school in their uniform daily. This means your child shall attend school in their proper uniform (varies from class grades) from head to toe. If your child is out of uniform, the school will contact you so that you can bring in the proper uniform for your child.

Food time! At Golden Door they provide breakfast and lunch for each child. Some may be eligible for free or reduced fare meals depending on the income eligibility guidelines provided on the Federal income chart. If you do not think you will qualify I would like to tell you the pricing for each meal. For a student that has to pay the full fare, breakfast will cost $1.35 and lunch will cost $2.50 daily. For a reduced fare student, breakfast will cost $.30 and lunch will cost $.40 daily. Students are not required to bring their lunch money with them. The school has a FSS PositiveID system in place; which is a system where your child’s finger will be recognized to uncover their account that you the parent sets up in the way of your choosing. This way, your child will be the only one who has access to their own meals, which in my opinion is great to hear.

The Golden Door Charter School has plenty more to offer, like their aftercare program and their anti-bullying policy. From what I can see, there’s something here to love for everyone. If this is the school for you requesting an application form is just a click away! Simply visit their website (posted above) and click on the “For Parents” tab up top. Once on that page, there will be a link on the side that says Request to Attend. Once you’ve filled out that form submit it and you’re one step closer to the school that’s right for you. Easy as one, two, three! So I urge you all to take a look at their website or even set up a visit where you can get a walk-through the school and experience the Golden Door experience for yourself. See if this school is right for you and your little one. And as always, Happy School Hunting!

Soaring Heights Charter School

STUDENT: I understand as a student of Soaring Heights Charter School, I agree to the following:

1.)   I will come to school ready to learn.
2.) I will have each day’s homework completed and ready to hand in.
3.) I will work to reach the highest expectations.
4.) I will respect my teachers.
Parents will acknowledge this contract by signing and returning it to school.

I wanted to begin this post with this agreement because I believe it shows the schools character. It shows what the Soaring Heights Charter School deems as important and so will be in turn be implementing in their students all throughout kindergarten to eighth grade. It’s a pretty smart way to start the school year if you ask me. It shows the child, and the parents, what lies ahead of them as well as teaches the child that they themselves are beginning to be more and more responsible for their own actions.

Keeping with the theme, the Soaring Heights Charter School in Jersey City has some strict policies on school arrival and departure time. The school allows for children to arrive at the school at 7:55 a.m. at the earliest and to stay afterschool up until 2:45 pm the latest, unless they will be participating in an after school program. The time is so strictly set because if a child is to arrive before the arrival time (which is earlier than the regular school day for those who would like to enjoy breakfast) they would be there unsupervised. The same goes for a child that stays in the school past the departure time.

In regards to school breakfast, as I stated above, the Soaring Heights Charter school offers students breakfast starting at 7:55am. Now, both school breakfast and lunch is offered and available to students, however it is not free. Parents are required to pay for school meals on a weekly basis. Parents are to send either a check or cash along with a completed menu to the school by Friday for your child to receive lunch. I am not sure on the schools policy on reduced or free lunch but as I always say, it doesn’t hurt to ask. So if you are interested or feel your child should be eligible for free lunch ask the school administration. They should lead you in the right direction.

At the Soaring Heights Charter School a school uniform is required. Students are required to wear khaki, black or navy pants, skirts or jumpers. They are to wear plain solid white shirts or sweaters. The shirts could also be of the solid colors light blue or navy. The following clothing items are not allowed:

  • Leggings, jeggings, skinny fit pants, jeans or tight fitting pants
  • Hats
  • Open toed shoes
  • Baggy clothing items

There is also a gym uniform requirement at the Soaring heights. Students are required to wear either sweatpants or shots with sweatshirts that are all black without any stripes or writing with the exception of the school logo. The shirt is required to have the school logo. The sneakers must have white soles and say “no skid marks” on the sole; I am not too sure on the reasoning for this, so be sure to ask if you have any questions.

Interested in applying to the Soaring Heights Charter School? Well the school is currently accepting applications. Simply visit their website at www.soaringheightscharterschool.com/application.php and click on the link to download the pdf version of the application. Print it, fill it out and mail the application form to the following address; Soaring Heights Charter School 1 Romar Avenue Jersey City, New Jersey 07305. The annual lottery will be held soon, on January 13th at 6:00pm so be sure to get those application forms in!

If you would like a follow-up on if the school received your application form, give the school a call. Remember to give the mail man enough time for delivery. And as always, happy school hunting!

Jersey City Community Charter School

Looking for a school whose goal it is to ensure the cognitive development of students? A school with the drive and the staff that is dedicated to the development of themselves in order to properly educate each child in attending? Well then, it is time to talk about Jersey City Community Charter School!

At Jersey City Community Charter School they make it their business to provide an innovative learning experience for the students. They believe on promoting “self-directed, life learning skills and facilitate the students ability to make responsible decisions” as stated on their website. They are well equipped to deliver such a promise by Academic and non-academic goals that the school has in place. These goals are easily accessible in just a click away (http://jcccsonline.org/goals-objectives/). Take a good look at what these goals are and how they are each divided. If you’re one for clear and concise schedules and objectives then this page in particular should spark your interest, so give it a try!

At Jersey City Community Charter School they believe firmly in eliminating any sort of outside distraction in the school environment. Because of this, they have a very strict policy concerning toys and electronics. The Jersey City Community Charter School is very adamant about keeping any toys and electronic games out of the school environment and so they have a confiscating rule towards it. If any child brings any of these items to the school they will be confiscated and will not be returned. If this is something that concerns you, you may want to talk to administration. If not, then perhaps like many parents this will just make you happy to hear that the Jersey City Community Charter School is concentrating on keeping your child focused on the important task at hand.
What about food you ask? You guessed it, lunch and breakfast are provided by the school for the children. The lunch application forms get distributed on the first day of school to be sent home with the child and to be filled out as soon as possible. Children who are not going to be eating the school lunch are still required to submit a lunch application form just so that they are on file. Once you submit the lunch application form you will be notified as to how much, if at all, the lunch will be costing you. So be sure to keep an eye out for that form and again fill it out as soon as possible.

Lastly, if the idea of no electronic entertainment might have scared you a little bit, I’m here to tell you that what has been taken away, is up for with the different classes and activities offered by Jersey City Community Charter School. The school offers up many interesting classes such as classes with scientists, teachers, animators, artists and programmers who are passionate about what they do. In classes such as Sponge Lab where the students are introduced to technology and interactive media, or classes like OpenClass, where teachers use a learning environment to help bring social learning and interactive experiences as a learning mechanism. Best of all these classes are open to everyone and free of charge. The school also hosts events throughout the year to get everyone together such as movie nights. How great is that!

Now if anything here has sparked your interests I strongly encourage you to give the school a call and see if you can plan a tour date for yourself and even your little one. I’m sure it’ll be an easy bit of information to get a hold of, being how impressed the Jersey City Community Charter School has left me by the skills they possess in clear and concise organization. And as always, Happy School hunting Everyone!

Reviews on Apple Montessori Schools

“Our son has attended Apple Montessori School since he was 18 months old and is now 3 years old. When we listen to what he has to say every day, it is easy to see all that he is learning – and it’s much more than just how to read, write and do math! We have seen that Apple Montessori has helped him to develop as a whole person including development of his independence, focus, self-control, and independent thinking.”~Marc & Caren Murren

Smart Start Academy: Affordable high quality Education in Jersey City

Smart Start AcademyPre-schools in jersey city

Smart Start Academy in Jersey City: As parents, we make many easy and tough decisions for our children. One of the more challenging ones is to decide whether your baby should go to a daycare or whether she’s ready for preschool. Too many questions arise – about Schedule, meals, activities, curriculum, and the most important is how do you feel about the people who is going to take care of your child.

As a first time mom and an immigrant I was so afraid of taking the wrong decision regarding to her school, everything was new to me. Luckily I stayed at home with my daughter for 2 years. But then came the time when she needed to meet and share with other kids and also she needed an avenue to assuage her curiosity. She needed to go to school and I needed to go back to work. Since my job has a flexible schedule, I wanted a school where she didn’t have to go every day. After all I could and wanted to keep sharing more moments with her.

By the month of march I decided to find an school for her. It wasn’t an easy task since we have so many schools in the town, all amazing but most of them have an everyday schedule. It was then by coincidence, I saw Smart Start Academy. I knocked the door and they opened with a big smile, immediately they offered me a tour, the school was so beautiful and they gave me all the details about curriculum, philosophy, schedule, activities, menu and I really loved it. They have flexible schedules as 2 days a week, 3 days a week, backup care program, after school daycare program and the everyday schedule. They got me that day and the same week I enrolled my daughter at Smart Start Academy.

What are the age ranges of children that your programs are geared toward?

The age ranges are from 6 weeks old to 5 years old and also they have an After school program for 6 to 9 years old at JC Heights Location. This program offers: Homework Assistance, Free Choice – games and group activities, Creative Arts – cooking, crafts, and hobbies, Media Club – computers, games, books and Summer Camp

What is the SSA care and teaching philosophy?

“Our mission is to create a nurturing, safe and respectful environment for our students, parents and teachers. We strive to create an exceptional learning experience for the whole child, cognitively, socially, emotionally, physically, and creatively.”

What is your approach to selecting teachers and staff?

“Passion for teaching is our number one and also we make sure that they have experience with different different age groups”

Why should parents enroll their kids at SSA? What differentiates SSA from other programs in the area special?

When I go and drop my daughter, during meetings and when I pick her up, the staff is always happy and smiling. My Daughter is shy and of course, as most of the kids, cried when she started. I was naturally worried about her adaptation to the school and not being with her all the time. The teachers always made feel like they have it under control, at the end of the day they made sure to tell me everything about her and they were so detailed that I felt safe as she was taking care by a family member. Now, my daughter is fully adapted, doesn’t stop talking about her friends and teachers and she is excited about going to school.

Miss Acosta told us why we should enrol our kids at SSA: “It is Quality education in an affordable price.Teachers of the school personally care about the kids. We became family with our families. We truly do want to know everything about our kids. It is genuine. We treated more as a family affair and we emotionally connect with our families. This is so important when you are caring for children as such a young age. They are so innocent, they are so pure and all they want is to learn, explore and have fun”.

Features to highlight:

Meals:

Don’t I have to cook? I’m in.

“We offer a variety of different meals. Each meal have the right proportions (carbs, proteins, veggies and fruits), we have the kids taste different kinds of food and we make sure they are organic-natural food. In our schools We have a chef who prepare the meals and we get the fresh ingredients from the supermarket as early is possible. The meals are included in the fees, our school is all inclusive” Told us Karlos Magner, also owner of SSA.

Assist with the Potty training: I’m just in this moment and she is doing great. “ We see the child signs of readiness and we start working on it and advice to the parents to follow the same process as we do so the potty training could be successful”. Cesia explained.

Foreign language exposure: We are a bilingual family and for us it was really important that her school was bilingual as well. Not only my daughter is speaking both but also is learning Sign language. It was a surprise for me when one day I went to pick her up and they were singing and doing the signs. Cesia told us a little bit more about it: “We have such a diverse group and it is so much fun. we all learn different phrases all the time. We teach sign language and spanish and If teachers come with a different language we encourage them to incorporate it in the lessons”.

Daily sheet App: Anxiety the first weeks of school? I was all anxiety since my daughter is 2 years old and It was new to us leaving her with someone else. SSA share this App with us where we can follow up our daughter’s day. Teachers upload pictures of what they are doing, every time they change a diaper, every time she drinks and eats. My husband and I were so glad with this feature and definitely helps a lot with the anxiety. At the end of the day we also receive a summary by email with the pictures attached. This would be a great memory because you can print them up and make albums of her first years in school.

The kids show more confident, It helps to low the anxiety, the kids feel part of something, they are part of the team. You have the feeling that you belong to something and that We are all the same”.

Cesia Acosta: “Physical activities are so important to us and depending on the school we take them once a day to the park. We have a backyard in the schools where they can play everyday and some days we take them to the park near in the neighborhood.
