An Interview with Joanne Johnson, Director of the new and growing Kiddie Academy, Educational Child Care in Hamilton Park, NJ

Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park

When did Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park open its doors:

Our Hamilton Park location opened in July of 2016.  It has been a wonderful experience for us so far! The community has been so warm and welcoming. We love seeing our neighbors, and try to participate in as many community events as possible. It’s great to see our families out at the community events too. The majority of our families live right here in Hamilton Park! In NJ we have 4 sister sites including us; Hoboken, Hamilton Park, Florham Park and Secaucus. All of our centers are committed to providing exceptional experiences for our students and their families. While Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park may be a brand new facility, the company is grounded in roots stemming back 36 years, making us Downtown Jersey City’s newest childcare, with the oldest roots!

Pre-school Jersey City

How many classrooms do you have here:

We have 10 classrooms and also have an indoor gymnasium.

What are the age groups of children enrolled:

We have a broad age range. We start with children as young as six weeks of age and go through Kindergarten for full time care. We also accommodate children up to the age of twelve. The older children come for winter breaks, spring breaks, before & after care and summer camp.  To secure a space, families may enroll for any age group as far as two years in advance. We do not require an application. Families can simply call in and learn about availability free of charge. We strive to make our operations as convenient as possible for our families.

Private school jersey cityWhat is your teacher/child ratio in your classrooms:

Our ratios vary based on the specific age group. We follow all NJ state regulations.

Do you provide an option for catered lunch:

We have a commercial kitchen at our facility.  We provide, breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack & low fat and whole milk (certified organic). Meals are prepared fresh daily using all natural, organic ingredients. For our student’s safety, the school is nut free. In the event of a student allergy and/or preference, our catering company will create meals for the child that meet their dietary restrictions.

Summer camp Jersey cityDo you have early drop off and after care options available:

Our operating hours are from 7am through 6.30pm. Families enjoy the benefit of being able to bring their children here anytime during those hours without incurring additional charges. This is a tremendous advantage for working families that can at times have unreliable schedules or face commuting delays. By offering unrestricted schedules throughout our operating hours, we have enabled our families to use our services without fear of unnecessary late fees and avoid commuting stress.

Day cares jersey cityWhat kind of curriculum do you follow:

Our curriculum called is called Life Essentials and is based on the 4 Pillars of Learning. Those pillars are: Technology, Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum, Character Education and Health & Fitness. The curriculum is written and developed at our corporate headquarters in Maryland and is overseen by our Curriculum Advisory Board. Board members, Dr.Rivkin, Dr. Wheeler, Dr. Rogowsky and Dr. Watson-Thompson work collaboratively to evaluate and refresh our curriculum. Refreshed curriculums are piloted for a year at a corporately owned school prior to being rolled out to our centers. This ensures that it is as finely tuned as possible by the time it comes to us.

Each teacher is able to enhance the curriculum to meet the needs and interests of their current students. Having this flexibility enables us to provide an experience that is tailored to our current student body.  Additionally, children from 6 weeks – 2 years of age receive an individualized lesson plan that is unique to them. To ensure that we are continuing to develop plans that meet our students needs and support their learning, our faculty complete developmental checklists and compile student portfolios for each child. We offer live streaming webcams in all classrooms, so parents can log in and watch as their child learns and explores! Also included are electronic daily student reports so parents are always aware of what happened during their child’s day.

What extracurricular activities do you offer:

We incorporate Spanish and American Sign Language into our curriculum. Additionally, we enhance our curriculum with a Music program called Kindermusik. Our older students also enjoy the benefits of having technology in their classrooms. Whether it’s a smart table, computer, or touch screen smart board, we teach our students how to interact with technology in a purposeful way that will support their understanding and engagement with these tools.

Do you offer a Summer Camp program:

Absolutely! All existing students are automatically enrolled in our Summer Camp. Children from the community can also enroll in the camp program. Summer camp is broken down by age group and is geared towards students 2 years through 12 years of age. Campers will experience a summer like no other! Campers enjoy field trips, camp activities and splash days! We are thrilled to launch our brand new Biological Sciences Experience this summer! Campers will have an opportunity to learn about, handle and interact with real specimens brought right to their classroom. Sharks, stingray, turtle, starfish, insects and reptiles are all of the list to be explored this summer at Kiddie Academy of Hamilton Park! Enrollment is open to the community right now and will end once all spots have been filled. We urge interested families to enroll as soon as possible as space is limited.

What would you like to say to our families:

Parenting in Public – Saying Goodbye

14. IMG_1780

With the start of the school year, the summer comes to an end. Often, it’s a time for goodbyes. Whether it’s a grandparent going back home, or a friend moving away, or a teacher finding another job – goodbyes are inevitable. Children who get easily attached are more affected than others; all we can do is cushion the blow.

  • Finding closure

I remind my kids of the departure the day before. We usually make a goodbye card for the person leaving and/or wrap a simple, meaningful gift – it could be a framed picture of the two together or a book that they both enjoyed. During the activity, I explain why the person is leaving, and where they are going. We talk about all the memories and I encourage them to express their feelings. We talk about if and when they will see them again and ways in which they can stay in touch if that’s a possibility. If not, I tell them that they will always have the happy memories of the time spent together. This process provides a sense of closure for the kids and prepares them for the farewell. When the time comes to say goodbye, the children having already processed their feelings are able to separate easily with limited tears and without beseeching the person to stay.

  • Cheering up!

I plan an activity that the children enjoy—a trip to the park or a play date—right after the goodbye so that the children’s focus shifts away from the sadness to excitement.

  • Staying connected

I also make a concerted effort to stay connected with the people they are attached to so that if they ask for them, they can talk to them over the phone or Skype, or even visit if possible. It provides security in that the children don’t feel abandoned.

  • Explaining goodbyes

Even if children seem unaffected by it, it’s still a good idea to talk to them briefly about the person leaving. Children, especially the younger ones, aren’t able to verbalize their feelings and might find it confusing. It’s safer to explain it than to ignore it. “The most painful goodbyes are the ones that are never said and never explained.”

Note: This is the final part of the series, “Parenting in Public.” As a parent of two little boys, I have tried and tested the techniques shared in this blog and I hope you were able to find some of these ideas helpful. Thank you all for reading! Until next time…

Parenting in Public – Trying to Leave

It’s always a struggle getting kids to leave when they are having fun. They aren’t bound by time constraints like adults and this can result in a battle. There are a few strategies to use to make it less painful for parents and children.

  • Saying the right thing when you’re ready to leave

Before we arrive wherever it is that we are going, I remind the children what time we have to leave i.e. after lunch or before nap etc. Once that time comes, I walk over to them, ask them what they are doing and then say, “it looks like you’re having fun, play for a little bit longer and then start wrapping up when you’re ready, we just have a few more minutes left.” They are more likely to listen when I walk over to them and they know that I understand how involved they are, as opposed to yelling it across from a room when they will either choose to ignore me or yell back, saying that they don’t want to leave yet. Allowing them to “wrap up when they are ready” gives them some sense of control and they are less likely to protest when its time to leave. I also remind them of what we have planned next so they have something to look forward to.

  • Time warnings

Next, I give them three time warnings – at ten minutes, five minutes and two minutes. At one minute I begin packing our things, putting on my coat etc. At the five minute mark I ask them to begin finishing up whatever it is that they are doing. It’s essential to allow children to complete whatever task they are in the middle before asking them to leave. It’s difficult for them to disengage because they don’t have the same sense of time and responsibility that we do.

  • Incorporating clean up in their play

If the children are having a hard time putting things away or disengaging, I incorporate the departure in their play. For example, if one is playing with trucks or cars, I tell him to park them in the right spot for the night so they can also rest. Sometimes they don’t want another child touching their things, so I ask them to give it to the teacher to hold it for them or put it on a higher shelf until next time. (It’s easier to do this than to get in to an argument over why it’s okay for other children to play with it– that’s a discussion for another time).

  • Modeling behavior

I ask them to thank the hosts, give a hug and say goodbye. If they are reluctant I model behavior for them and we have the “how-to-be-polite” discussion on our way home! The travails of parenthood!

Jersey Shore Beaches: 5 Best Beaches near Jersey City

Best beaches near Jersey City:

It’s summer and let’s be honest, all we really want to do is sit on the beach. Although living in a city makes it hard to get a beach day in, it’s easier than you think. We live fairly close to some of the best beaches around — at the Jersey Shore! Forget what you’ve seen on reality TV and get down to one of these glorious NJ gems for a day trip. It’s fun in the sun for the whole family! Here are some of the best picks.

beaches near jersey citySandy Hook National Seashore

Sandy Hook is a great day trip for our area. It takes just over an hour by car from downtown Jersey City or 40 minutes by ferry (from Manhattan). There is so much to do because it’s a beach and national park all in one! Besides the beaches, Sandy Hook offers fishing, bike riding, trails and even camping now! The beaches are vast and very clean. There are parking lots near each beach and bathhouses offering bathrooms and showers. There are even food trucks at some of the beaches. You can also bring your cooler and do a beach picnic, but you must take your trash with you when you leave. A word of caution: Sandy Hook is a popular destination on weekends, once the park is full they close the gates, so be sure to get there early and call ahead to make sure the park is still open to visitors.

Fees: The beaches are free, but you must pay to enter the park. Luckily, you pay per car, so it can be more economical than some Jersey Shore beaches. The fee is $15 per car from 7am – 5pm and if you have a Golden Access or Senior Pass (for national parks in the US) the fee $7.50 per car.

Getting There: Sandy Hook is located just outside the Highlands via the Garden State Parkway at exit 117. Ferry service is provided by Seastreak and takes about 40 minutes from East 35th Street and Pier 11 in Manhattan. The cost is $45/Adult 13 and over roundtrip and $17/Child 5 – 12 on weekends. Kids are totally free Monday – Friday! Bikes are an extra $5.

beaches near jersey cityAsbury Park

Best beaches near jersey city:

Asbury Park is more fun now than ever before! There’s so much to do, including lots of lovely beaches to play on. The infamous Asbury Park Boardwalk offers many events, activities and great restaurants. Some of the great eating options include Pop’s Garage, McLoone’s Asbury Grille and many more. There is even Asbury Splash Park, which you can access all day for $9/children and $5/adults. Parking is available in either metered spots or in paid lots. Meters are $2/hour with a maximum of three hours on Ocean Avenue. Other numbered spots (off of Ocean Avenue) are $1/hour without any time limits. There is even an app for “Pay-By-Cell Parking.” Check out their website for more information.

Fees: Beach badges are sold on the Boardwalk between 1st and 2nd Avenues and it is cash only. Daily badges are $5/person Monday – Friday and $6/person on weekends.

Getting There: Asbury Park is about an hour away by car via the Garden State Parkway at exit 102. You can also take a NJ Transit train and get off at the Asbury Park Station, which is located on Cookman Avenue. See below for NJ Transit Shore deals information.*

Belmar

The beaches of Belmar stretch for more than a mile and offer something for everyone in the family. Kids will love the beach playgrounds, which are peppered around every few blocks along the beach. There is even a surf camp with classes for all ages! If you are feeling more into a beach volleyball game, there are nets on the beach, too. There are beach activities like a natural beach with signs that describe various types of plants and birds nearby and 9th Avenue boasts the wreck of SS Malta, which crashed during a storm in 1885 and the stern post is still visible. The 10th Avenue beach offers umbrella and beach chair rentals – so you don’t have to lug all your gear with you! Click here for a map of the boardwalk and all the beach access points. For a yummy post-beach lunch, check out 10th Avenue Burrito and if you are traveling by car and have some time, take the short ride over to Pete & Elda’s in Neptune for some good pizza.

Fees: Badges are required to enter the beaches through Labor Day. The daily fee is $7/person and children 15 and under are free. You may purchase badges at 6th and Ocean Avenues.

Getting There: Belmar is about an hour drive from downtown Jersey City via Garden State Parkway at exit 98. You can also take a NJ Transit train there and get off at the Belmar train station, but take a cab to the beach because it’s a bit of a walk. See below for NJ Transit Shore deals information. *

beaches near jersey cityPoint Pleasant Beach

Point Pleasant Beach has been a favorite in my family for years! Not only do you get the beach here, but you get a great boardwalk, too. Jenkinson’s Boardwalk has something for everyone. The amusement rides are a blast and there are many geared toward the younger set, so this is a kiddie favorite. Tuesday and Friday enjoy wristband days for $18/person and ride as many rides as you like. Jenkinson’s Aquarium is right on the boardwalk, as well and it’s small enough to be very kid-friendly. There are arcades aplenty, mini golf and tons of great boardwalk food choices (think funnel cakes, pizza, ice cream, etc.) Parking is sometimes a challenge. There are metered spots along Ocean Avenue and a large metered lot on the corner of Ocean and Arnold Avenues. Otherwise, Jenkinson’s offers four paid parking lots along the boardwalk. There are free street parking spots on the side streets off of the boardwalk, but they can be hard to find.

Fees: Daily rates for the beach do not include use of the bathhouse facilities – it will cost you $4/adult and $3/children. Daily badge prices are: $2.50 for children 5 – 11 on weekdays and weekends, $8.50 for adults 12 and up on weekdays and $9.50 on weekends. You can rent beach chairs for $8/day and umbrellas for $10/day.

Getting There: Point Pleasant Beach is a little over an hour’s drive from downtown Jersey City via Garden State Parkway at exit 98. You can also take a NJ Transit train and get off at the Point Pleasant Beach train station. It is a bit of a walk from the beach, but there are usually cabs waiting there, but plan ahead and have a number for a cab service with you. See below for NJ Transit Shore deals information. *

beaches near jersey cityIsland Beach State Park

Island Beach State Park is located in Berkeley, just passed Seaside Park at the end of the barrier island. This is a great place to go on a day trip. You can bring a cooler and even a grill and have a full-day beach day. There are main beach areas with bathhouse facilities and parking lots. There are also more remote beach areas with parking spots along the main road, to which you have to hike a little bit out to. Lifeguards are only present at the main “swimming” beaches. There is much wildlife to be seen, which the kids love! The park boasts almost 10 miles of beach for you to explore. It’s also a great place for bike ridinghiking, surfing, kayaking andfishing. The park opens at 7am during the summer months, but get there early because once the parking spots are filled, they close the gates and vehicles will no longer be able to get in.

Fees: During the summer the entrance fee is $10/car for NJ residents and $20/car for non-residents on weekends and $6/car for NJ residents and $12/car for non-residents on weekdays. If you walk or ride your bike into the park, it is free.

Getting There: Island Beach State Park is most easily accessible by car. It is about a 1.5 hour drive from downtown Jersey City via Garden State Parkway at exit 82. In the summer months this ride takes much longer, so plan accordingly. There is also bus service to Island Beach State Park via the Bus Route 137 from Port Authority Terminal, NYC, but you have to let the driver know to continue on from Seaside Park during the summer weekends.

*NJ Transit Shore Deals:

NJ Transit is offering several travel options to the Jersey Shore this summer. One option is the Shore Express, which is offered on weekends and holidays through September 1. This train will depart Penn Station, NYC at 7:52am and 10:01am making stops at many shore towns without a transfer in Long Branch. There are return express trains departing Bay Head at 4:54pm and 6:54pm.

Another option is the NJ Transit Beach Package. This package includes a round-trip train ride and beach pass for Long Branch, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach and Belmar. From Penn Station, NYC the cost of the package is $31.50 and from Hoboken Terminal and Newark Penn Station the cost is $23.50. These packages must be purchased from ticket agents or ticket vending machines, they are not sold old trains.

A third option is the Shore EZRide Jitney. This shuttle service is $1/ride and operates on weekends and holidays through Labor Day. The jitney will take you from the Long Branch Train Station to the beaches of Long Branch, plus shopping and restaurants.
