Free Public Libraries in Jersey City

The Jersey City Free Public Library

The Jersey City Free Public Library (JCFPL) is the largest municipal library in the State of New Jersey. The Library meets the needs of the community by providing a wide array of programming and resources, and access to a broad range of print, digital, and audiovisual collections. This is the official mission statement of the JCFPL: To promote lifelong learning and cultivate equity in our community through innovative programs, engaging collections, welcoming spaces, and committed staff.

In 1901, the library opened with 15,515 books, ready to serve Jersey City’s residents. At present, the JCFPL consists of ten branch locations and a Bookmobile, offering physical and digital collections exceeding one million items. The library has over 140 staff members.

Bookmobile

The Bookmobile of the Jersey City Free Public Library is a gift from the Jersey City Free Public Library Foundation to the dedicated users of the City. It is a disabled-accessible, custom-designed bookmobile with two public access computers, a DVD player for short films, and an eclectic collection of books.
