Dear JC Families,
Iu2019m very excited to let you know that I am running for the Jersey City Board of Education! This election is so important because the next Board will select our new superintendent and will manage a $630,000,000 budget. How this budget is managed affects the lives of thousands of students as well as every property owneru2019s taxes. My aim is to represent the interests of parents through the ‘Parents for Progress’ slate, which includes myself, Vidya Ganghadin, and Marilyn Roman. We want to do this by
- Expanding specialty programs. Particularly the magnet schools, Gifted & Talented, and the Dual Language program- our highest performing programs. We also want to restart vocational training to support students that are not immediately collegebound- an idea the Jersey City business community supports.
- Establishing a teacher evaluation system. A teacher tenure reform bill requiring teacher evaluations is working its way through the NJ legislature. If it passes then we will have a chance to build a system that recognizes our strongest teachers and draws the best possible people into the field.
- Auditing how our finances are spent. An audit will inform a strategic plan by answering the following questions- where do we spend our money, what are individuals responsible for, how does this compare to other similar districts? We spend more than almost any other district in the state- accountability and management are our issues- not money.
I am very proud to say that our slate has been endorsed by Councilman Steven Fulop, one of our most effective and transparent local government politicians, but this election will be won or lost by my ability to engage voters. To make a difference I need your help in 3 ways.
- Get out to vote on April 17.
- Get involved in the campaign. This election will be won or lost based on voter turnout. Can you reach out to 10 people and commit to getting them to vote on April 17?
- Attend our fundraiser or make a financial contribution. On April 7 we have a wine tasting at Madame Claude’s Wine Shop in Hamilton Square. Tickets are $50. If you canu2019t attend please consider making a financial contribution. At this time we can accept payment via paypal https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=ENCB2GQUZURZ6This site has limited capacity so please also RSVP to Ryan Strother at [email protected]All contributions will be filed with the NJ Election Law Enforcement Commission.
Thanks so much and I hope I can count on you for this election. To receive more information about the election and upcoming candidate forums send me an email and I will add you to our distribution list.
All the best,
Sangeeta
