Registration is now open for Chess classes for children of all levels at SchoolPlus Hudson. It is a well known fact that chess develops intelligence. And what is intelligence if not the ability to solve problems? In our classes, children learn to play the game and discover that the techniques used to analyze chess situations can also be used, sometimes quite creatively, to grapple with puzzling questions in school and real life.
We offer classes for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced level players. Our classes are small in size, and designed for children of all abilities, providing an environment for our teacher to work with each child, answer questions, demonstrate techniques and encourage a creative thinking process, all in an atmosphere of fun and success.

Acquaintance with chess starts with chess basics. Children become familiar with the chess board and chess pieces; they learn general rules and allowed moves step by step; children study various strategical and tactical elements in chess, beginnings and endgames. They learn by analyzing simple positions and by practicing playing the game in every class.
Intermediate Level (1 hour class):
Children continue to study various strategies and tactics of playing chess. Children learn to concentrate on one and two-move checkmates, as well as various combinations featuring queen sacrifices, double attacks, discovering checks, and many other useful tactical elements, or just quiet moves that eliminate the opponent’s potential flight squares (depending on class level). Children practice playing chess against each other and the instructor in every class.Advanced Level (1.5 hour class):
This class is taught by Greg Markzon, National and FIDE Master.
An indispensable part of this class is the study of “immortal” games played by world champions (Kasparov, Fisher, Alekhin), as well as games of today’s strongest grandmasters. Theoretical knowledge is supported by practicing playing the game in every class. Children learn advanced strategy and ideas behind openings, middlegames and endgames. At home, students practice by working on various assignments such as games to analyze and studies to solve. Students are trained and encouraged to participate in chess competitions between regional branches of SchoolPlus and other tournaments in New York and New Jersey. Rated players are welcome. In addition to Chess classes, SchoolPlus Hudson also offers enrichment classes in Math, English, Creative Writing, Early Logic, Russian and Art.
