Jersey City Public School Emergency Shelter Sites updates
From Facilities Chair Suzanne Mack
President Sterling Waterman
submitted by VP Carol LesterUpdate 11pm. Saturday Per Director Kierce, Office of Emergency Management
There are currently a total of 429 people at the Jersey City Emergency Shelters (+15 who were using the pet friendly PERSHING shelter at various times during the day) The capacity is quite large should there be an even greater need for more then 2,000.
If anyone has an emergency need to be picked up and brought to a shelter city, recreation and school district have vehicles. If you have a pet you will be transported by vehicles under the direction of the Office of Emergency Management
Call 201-547-5681Department of Recreation buses are still on the road under the auspices of the OEM, and will be until the OEM determines it is no longer safe for drivers. They are still predicting very high winds and severe flooding in the low lying areas of Jersey City along both the Hudson and the Hackensack Rivers. Call 201-547-5691 if you need to be taken to a shelter!
Shelter Condition Update!!
Sterling, Suzanne and I toured every public school shelter from 6-9:30pm evening and are happy to let you know that they are dry, comfortable, clean and extremely welcoming and well staffed. The public schools freed up some snacks, juice and milk, Freeholder Bill O’Dea donated food to a few of the shelters earlier in the evening and at around 9pm the Office of Emergency Management delivered dinner. There’s juice and muffins from BOE for breakfast plus more substantial fare as needed from the OEM to be delivered as needed tomorrow. It is truly a concerted effort across many professionals who are working 24-7.PS 4 is full, but OEM will bus overflow to available sites.
Call OEM to be bused to alternate site before you leave home and you will be picked up
