Jersey City Public Schools closed on Monday, November 5

This is tough news for every family in Jersey City, but the closure is because of two reasons: many of our schools still do not have power and many of our staff cannot get to their school because they canu2019t get gas or their transportation route has broken down.
School was originally scheduled to be closed on November 8 and 9 for the Teacheru2019s Unionu2019s annual conference, but the conference has been cancelled so the District is planning to have school in session on those days if the Office of Emergency Management clears our schools to open. We are working hard to get schools opened back up on Wed, but I would encourage you to get in place some back up arrangements in case that is not possible. You will receive a robocall each evening to confirm if school is open for the following day. You can find more information here http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2012/11/jersey_city_schools_to_remain_1.html#incart_river
If your child attends a charter or private school then please check with the school about closures. I have heard, but cannot verify, that some of them may open tomorrow.

      2. Election Day on November 6
Many of you may not have received your sample ballots in the mail. You can find one here http://www.hudsoncountyclerk.org/elections/2012%20General%20Election%20Sample%20Ballots/JC%20Smpl%20f10.pdf Polling stations for this yearu2019s election will continue to be in public buildings across the city from 6am to 8pm. There are 3 options for voting
      – Go to your polling station and vote as you normally do. You can find your polling station here https://voter.njsvrs.com/PublicAccess/servlet/com.saber.publicaccess.control.PublicAccessNavigationServlet?USERPROCESS=PollingPlace
      – Go to the County Clerku2019s Office and vote there by requesting a u2018Vote by Mailu2019 Ballot. You can request the ballot and vote in one visit. You can vote today until 430pm or Monday between 830am – 5pm. The County Clerku2019s office is at 257 Cornelison Avenue. You can find more info here http://www.hudsoncountyclerk.org/default.htm
      – Vote by email by downloading the u2018Mail-in Ballot Applicationu2019 from the Countyu2019s website (http://www.hudsoncountyclerk.org/default.htm). These applications must be submitted by 5pm on November 6.
As of Sunday there have no announcements that polling stations will be closed. If you find that your regular station is closed then please use the mail in ballot application.

      3. School Board Resolution
When you vote on Tuesday, November 6 please remember to vote on the public questions. The third public question is related to the annual School Board elections. Currently they are held as a special election every April. This resolution would move the election to November. A yes vote is in favor of moving the election. Some are advocating a u2018yesu2019 vote to increase voter turnout. It is estimated that in Hudson County voter turnout is between 20-40% in the November election and it is 2-4% in April. Some are advocating a u2018nou2019 vote because the November ballot has many more issues on it and the School Board related issues may not get the coverage they deserve if it is lumped into the general election. You can read about the pros and cons of this resolution here http://blog.nj.com/njv_guest_blog/2012/01/moving_nj_school_board_electio.html

      4. Meet and Greets with Dr. Lyles
Last month we had a meet and greet with our new Superintendent, Dr. Lyles, at the Mary Bethune Center in Ward F with almost 100 parents, residents, and religious leaders. I want to thank Pastor Joyce Watterman for hosting and raising awareness about the meeting. This 2 hour evening session was an opportunity for parents and residents to ask questions and share their experiences in the Jersey City Public Schools with Dr. Lyles. Please let me know if youu2019d like to arrange a meet and greet in your neighborhood. I can help you to get something set up and we can use it as a starting point to further engage parents in their local school.

      5. November 15 General Board of Education Meeting
Our next Board Meeting is scheduled for November 15 at 6pm at PS11, which is located at 886 Bergen Ave. Normally we have committee meetings 1-2 weeks prior to this meeting but many of the committee meetings will be cancelled so that all hands are on deck to get schools opened. Please stay tuned for more information on this meeting because some of the details may change.

Take care and email me if you have any questions.
