If you’re expecting, secondhand baby gear can save you a bundle!!
…But it’s not always smart to skimp.
Many products from only a couple of years ago don’t meet CURRENT safety standards.
BUY – DON’T BORROW. It could save your child’s life. In addition, checking cpsc.gov regularly to ensure your gear has not been recalled could prevent damage, or worse.
Here’s what you SHOULD NOT swap: (This includes buying from another parent, or even accepting a free hand-me-down!!)
1. CRIBS
:: My son Kaiden (now five) had a drop-side crib, however, now they can no longer be sold. Items change quickly for babies and kiddies so fast! Newer, safer cribs are now on the market. Even if an older crib looks safe, it may not have been tested with the most recent safety standards or could have loose or missing hardware, creating gaps that can trap a child.
2. BABY WALKERS
:: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends AGAINST using baby walkers altogether, as they can actually delay walking! If you do choose to use one, stick to new models. older walkers may not have features that can prevent the product from rolling down stairs, which is the BIGGEST risk!
3. CAR SEATS
:: I HAVE SEEN MANY FRIENDLY POSTS ON THIS FORUM OFFERING BABY GEAR THAT IS NO LONGER NEEDED, NONE MORE THAN CAR SEATS. DON’T DO IT. SELLERS SHOULD REFRAIN FROM POSTING OFFERS, AND BUYER BEWARE!! HERE’S WHY!…
A USED CAR SEAT THAT ISN’T UP TO SAFETY STANDARDS OR IS MISSING PARTS MAY NOT PROTECT YOUR CHILD IN A CRASH, AND THERE’S NO WAY TO BE SURE THAT THE SEAT WASN’T INVOLVED IN A PREVIOUS ACCIDENT – SOMETHING THAT MAY HAVE LED TO INVISIBLE DAMAGE.
No one can ensure the safety of a child the way a parent can – even another parent. By accepting HAND-ME-DOWN items, parents are exposing their children to serious risks, which are easily avoidable.
An educated mom is the BEST mom.
