There is a new, free, and non-profit charter school in Jersey City. It’s called Jersey City Global Charter School (JCGCS). I was hoping you might be able to spread the word about the school. JCGCS sounds excellent based on what I’ve learned and may be critical for parents who are currently on wait lists at other charter schools or who are struggling between private vs. public school choice for K-8 grades.

As a bit of background, I met with a member of their Board of Trustees today, Nirupa Umapathy. Nirupa is a 100% volunteer trustee for the school who is also passionate about bettering Jersey City’s education landscape. She is also a managing director at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, so she speaks to the caliber of the leadership team at this school.

Anything you might be able to do to help get the word out to parents in the JC community would be appreciated.

The school’s website is: http://www.jcglobalcharterschool.org/. Here is some basic info about the school:
The Jersey City Global Charter School was granted its charter on January 2012 by the Commissioner of Education of the State of New Jersey. The school is open for enrollment for 2012-2013 school year and will provide a free, academically rigorous education to students in Grades K-3. We will be basing our learning program on the award-winning 40-year old MicroSociety Program (http://www.microsociety.org).
The school serves Kindergarten through Grade 8. We are located at 199-201 Summit Avenue (off Montgomery) across the Beacon complex and are reachable at 201-243-0001 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 201-243-0001 end_of_the_skype_highlighting. Visit us at http://www.jcglobalcharterschool.org or on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/jcglobalcharterschool).
They are enrolling onsite daily. Parents can call to set up an appointment.
Some of what makes the school unique:

MicroSociety based learning: The MicroSocietyu00ae program represents a new breed of learning environments. This research-based education program transforms classrooms by providing a real-world context for academic learning. Students collaborate with parents, business volunteers, and teachers to create a functioning small community within the school. Students spend one class period each day in their jobs where they learn to run businesses, apply technology, develop government and social agencies, and create cultural and arts organizations. Gradually, students become immersed in the realities of a free-market economy with taxes, property concerns, income issues and politics.
Personalized Learning Plan for each student which will identify annual goals and academic strengths and weaknesses. Students, teachers and families will be jointly vested in ensuring that goals are successfully achieved
Focus on inquiry-based learning, differentiated instruction, and student empowerment to encourage the the development of high-level reasoning and critical thinking skills
Application of learned concepts to the real world through MicroSociety: From 3-4 pm daily, students create and manage real world systems such as businesses and government creating a miniature society within the school
Small classes with no more than 22 children in each classroom
Spanish classes aligned with needs of the student population
Integration of technology to support classroom instruction supplemented by a web-based system that enables parents to track their child’s progress and communicate with the school
Extended school hours (4 -6 pm) to accommodate tutoring and extra-curricular activities
