5 tips on How to evaluate a school

Google it.

pre school in Jersey City day care in Jersey City

We live in the age of the internet. Any time you sign your kid up for anything all, you should be first looking on the internet for clues about the school’s reputation. Do they have a website? If they do, check it out – what’s on it? Does it look professional?

If the website is the window to the program, how are they presenting themselves to the world? If they don’t have a website, does that tell you something about the way they choose to communicate? Take it all in.

Ask the moms.

pre school inJersey City day care in Jersey City

Being in contact with other moms is essential to our survival as a species – and I mean that both in the jokey way but also in an I’m-not- kidding-at- all way. None of us can do this on our own. Ask other moms (online or in person) what experiences they’ve had at this school, or that daycare, or with program you’re interested in. Ask for suggestions.

Pass by the school.

Walk, bike, or drive by the school. Do this in the morning, when people are going in.

Do it during the day, do it at pick up time. Notice what’s happening. Is there chaos? Trust your gut – do these adults look like they know what they’re doing? Would you be comfortable letting your kid loose here?

Tour the school.

Find a time when you can go to the school to tour it. When you’re touring, observe not just with your eyes, but with your instincts too. Hone in – remember your gut. Visually you’re looking for cleanliness, happy and engaged children, organization of toys and equipment, multiple adults paying attention to and/or moving around with children.

BE FLEXIBLE.

Allow yourself to be impressed or disappointed – especially if your expectation was to be impressed or disappointed. Remember that no school has rainbows shooting out of its roof, so don’t set your expectations impossibly high. On the flip side, if you feel uncomfortable with a place (even if everyone else says its wonderful) don’t choose that place. And if you do choose the wrong place, allow yourself the flexibility to switch.

Reviews on Apple Montessori Schools

“Our son has attended Apple Montessori School since he was 18 months old and is now 3 years old. When we listen to what he has to say every day, it is easy to see all that he is learning – and it’s much more than just how to read, write and do math! We have seen that Apple Montessori has helped him to develop as a whole person including development of his independence, focus, self-control, and independent thinking.”~Marc & Caren Murren

All Saints Episcopal Day School: Service, Spirituality, and Academic Rigor

Just an 11 minute bus ride from the vast Hudson River, a picturesque, small, quaint school by the name of All Saints Episcopal Day School resides in the essence  of Jersey City. All Saints is a private, non denominational school which, with its medieval-style buildings that are still somehow unformidable, is a place that seems to have perfected the  academics-and-environment- type learning model.

Parents’ Reviews

“My son is thriving at All Saints, and we are thrilled to be part of such a fantastic educational environment. As a current kindergarten student, he is truly excited about going to school each day. He has grown so much since his first days as a student in the school’s Nursery Program. The teachers and staff are warm and nurturing. And the school’s curriculum is engaging and comprehensive. All Saints is truly a wonderful school.”

“Our son has been attending All Saint’s Day School since nursery and is now in fifth grade. Our son loves his school! He is happy and feels safe and comfortable in his environment. There are so many things we like about the school but to name a few we like that they have a challenging curriculum and we appreciate its core values and beliefs. As well, the school has an excellent system and policy regarding parent and teacher communication is that is effective and an emergency system that works well for reaching parents at a moment’s notice. The school offers music, arts, languages, and sports too. The school is major part of our lives and we could not be happier with our decision to remain at All Saint s. Thank you All Saint s! -All Saint’s parent”

Soaring Heights Charter School in Jersey City

Hi everyone! Before I begin speaking about Soaring Heights Charter School I would like to begin with something that is handed out to the parents and students (on the first day of classes I presume) that is to be agreed and signed upon:

STUDENT: I understand as a student of Soaring Heights Charter School, I agree to the following:

1.)   I will come to school ready to learn.
2.) I will have each day’s homework completed and ready to hand in.
3.) I will work to reach the highest expectations.
4.) I will respect my teachers.
Parents will acknowledge this contract by signing and returning it to school.

I wanted to begin this post with this agreement because I believe it shows the schools character. It shows what the Soaring Heights Charter School deems as important and so will be in turn be implementing in their students all throughout kindergarten to eighth grade. It’s a pretty smart way to start the school year if you ask me. It shows the child, and the parents, what lies ahead of them as well as teaches the child that they themselves are beginning to be more and more responsible for their own actions.

Keeping with the theme, the Soaring Heights Charter School in Jersey City has some strict policies on school arrival and departure time. The school allows for children to arrive at the school at 7:55 a.m. at the earliest and to stay after school up until 2:45 pm the latest, unless they will be participating in an after school program. The time is so strictly set because if a child is to arrive before the arrival time (which is earlier than the regular school day for those who would like to enjoy breakfast) they would be there unsupervised. The same goes for a child that stays in the school past the departure time.

In regards to school breakfast, as I stated above, the Soaring Heights Charter school offers students breakfast starting at 7:55am. Now, both school breakfast and lunch is offered and available to students, however it is not free. Parents are required to pay for school meals on a weekly basis. Parents are to send either a check or cash along with a completed menu to the school by Friday for your child to receive lunch. I am not sure on the schools policy on reduced or free lunch but as I always say, it doesn’t hurt to ask. So if you are interested or feel your child should be eligible for free lunch ask the school administration. They should lead you in the right direction.

At the Soaring Heights Charter School a school uniform is required. Students are required to wear khaki, black or navy pants, skirts or jumpers. They are to wear plain solid white shirts or sweaters. The shirts could also be of the solid colors light blue or navy. The following clothing items are not allowed:

  • Leggings, jeggings, skinny fit pants, jeans or tight fitting pants
  • Hats
  • Open toed shoes
  • Baggy clothing items

There is also a gym uniform requirement at the Soaring heights. Students are required to wear either sweatpants or shots with sweatshirts that are all black without any stripes or writing with the exception of the school logo. The shirt is required to have the school logo. The sneakers must have white soles and say “no skid marks” on the sole; I am not too sure on the reasoning for this, so be sure to ask if you have any questions.

Interested in applying to the Soaring Heights Charter School? Well the school is currently accepting applications. Simply visit their website at www.soaringheightscharterschool.com/application.php and click on the link to download the pdf version of the application. Print it, fill it out and mail the application form to the following address; Soaring Heights Charter School 1 Romar Avenue Jersey City, New Jersey 07305. The annual lottery will be held soon, on January 13th at 6:00pm so be sure to get those application forms in!

If you would like a follow-up on if the school received your application form, give the school a call. Remember to give the mail man enough time for delivery. And as always, happy school hunting!
