Cordero/PS 37 in Jersey City has a vibrant Pre K program.

Rafael De J Cordero/PS 37 in Jersey City offers Pre-K 3 and 4 programs serving students aged 3 and 4. Currently, we have 60 spaces for Pre-K 3 and 105 spaces for Pre-K 4 (Including an inclusion room which serves general education students and some students with special needs). This does not include our Pre-K disabled classes which mix 3 and 4 year olds with disabilities as determined by their IEPs. What is capacity for Pre K 3 & 4? When the Pre K program is at capacity, some children get bused to other schools. This is determined by a lottery overseen by the Early Childhood Department. For Pre-K 3, all spaces are determined by lottery. Once students are in Pre-K 3, they automatically are enrolled in Pre-K 4. The remaining spaces are determined by lottery if there are more students registered than spaces. Those not selected are bused to other schools with capacity until spaces open up in the school. The Early Childhood Department decides which children get bused.??? This year, 32 students will be bused to another school due to over capacity at Rafael De J Cordero/PS 37 in Jersey City.

Rafael De J Cordero/PS 37 in Jersey City  offers discounted lunch for students who qualify. Families have to complete an application to determine if they meet the financial requirements. Approximately 40% of students are eligible for free lunch.

Sports such as soccer, basketball, and flag football are offered to middle school students after school (are these after school???). After school activities include enrichment programs such as music, wood carving and other classes. There is a nominal fee for these programs.

If you want to see the “largest display since the Millennial Celebration,” this 25-minute fireworks presentation will have a myriad of pyrotechnic designs and colors. There are several places where you can get great views of this magnificent fireworks show. The barges will be located along the East River from 24th to 42nd streets.

This is the fireworks display to see if you have the opportunity. It’s the most massive Independence Day fireworks presentation in the United States. It is anticipated that more than 3 million spectators will enjoy viewing it from various locations throughout Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and New York City. More than 12 million people in the United States will avoid the crowded streets and parks and join in this celebration by watching it on television. This live celebration can be seen on NBC’s two hour national broadcast of “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular” beginning at 8 pm ET/PT and 7 pm CT, with a one-hour encore presentation at 10 pm ET/PT, and 9 pm CT.

Live entertainment will include Blake Shelton and an extraordinary rendition of “God Bless America” by Kelly Clarkson to celebrate the songs 100th anniversary.

Things To Note:

The Brooklyn Bridge Park and Brooklyn Heights Promenade is no longer a prime location for viewing since the barges are closer to Midtown. So remember, the fireworks are not visible from any location at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Stay up-to-date with the latest information by visiting: www.macys.com/fireworks or calling the Macy’s Firework Display Hotline at 212.494.4495. Here you’ll find valuable information about points of entry, viewing places and information to help people with disabilities enjoy the celebration too.

New features for 2018 include neon pinwheels, swirling water fountains, brocade horse tails, ghosting fans, blooming rings and pulsing hearts. There are also two more barges than in previous years which add to the fun.

Dress comfortable and be ready to stand or sit. You also need to make your decision and be at your viewing location several hours early. The New York Police Department (NYPD) will not allow backpacks, lawn chairs or other large items into the viewing areas.

Community Compost Company Jersey City

Community Compost Company Jersey City: Compost! Building a Better Future

Andrea Rodriguez/ Community Compost Company

Over the past three years, Community Compost Company has serviced residents and local businesses in Jersey City, diverting nearly 57,000 LBS of food waste from landfills. Composting is another form of recycling in which food scraps are separated from the rest of our waste and combined with other materials (such as leaves, wood chips and manure) that will decompose, with the proper moisture levels and aeration, into an amendment that can be added to the soil to rebuild health and structure.

In honor of International Compost Awareness Week, we are here to share just how beneficial composting an apple core, banana peel, and every other food scrap is, to you, your family and the Jersey City Community.

Grow healthy plants and food

Compost helps your local farmers and gardeners maintain high quality soil, reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides. It supplies nutrients to enrich soil, which is necessary for healthy plant growth. So the peppers and cucumbers you buy at JC’s farmers markets, are great reasons to start composting.

Improves air and water quality

Many don’t realize that garbage from Jersey City is transported to a landfill in West Virginia. By removing and processing organic materials locally, we’re reducing the emissions associated with transporting, and in the process, improving the air quality and public health in our city. Compost also retains water, which reduces watering needs and prevents erosion and flooding.

Reduce food waste

Each family member tosses about 300 LBS of food every year. A family of four loses $1,500 a year on wasted food, and throughout the US, 40% of all food grown and produced ends up in the garbage. As you separate food scraps from the rest of your trash, you are much more aware of how much food you throw away. This allows you to change your shopping habits and save money by only buying what you need.

Develop new green jobs to improve the local economy

Community Compost Company has employees who live and work in Jersey City!

Protect the environment

Organic materials (comprised of food scraps, yard trimmings, wood waste, and paper products) are the largest components of solid “waste” ending up in landfills. Once there, these materials are forced to decompose without oxygen, which creates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By diverting organic material from the waste stream, we help families cut their carbon footprint.

These are just a few of the many benefits of recycling your food scraps and using compost. New customers can sign up to receive their first month free with promo
