If you are looking for a fun and active way to get the whole family outside in the summer sun, try strawberry picking! There are plenty of strawberry-picking farms around Jersey City, NJ, so you have no shortage of options. Not only will the kids have fun searching for strawberries in the fields, but they get to learn a bit about where their delicious food comes from and the importance of farming, and they will be much more excited to eat their fruit for the day.

Another advantage to picking your strawberries is you can come back home and make pies, jams, or cakes with your freshly picked berries. In addition, you can get your kids in the kitchen with you and use the berries as another fun summer cooking activity. We think it is fantastic when you can take one family experience and turn it into multiple activities to spend even more time together.

Below are some strawberry-picking farms around Jersey City, NJ. Each farm listed below is about an hour or less away, so you don’t have to trek too far from home. So grab your basket, pack the kids in the car, and let’s pick some strawberries!

Alstede Farms

Strawberry Picking begins in June.

About 55 minutes away from Jersey City, Alstede Farms offers a daily opportunity for strawberry picking from 9 am to 6 pm without any closed days. Admission is free (additional cost for rides). The farm also features hayrides and live entertainment to enjoy before you start picking your berries. Each visitor is required to purchase a PYO (Pick Your Own) Entry Ticket, which includes access to the pick-your-own areas, a choice between a quart container or a six-quart flat for collecting strawberries, the cost of the strawberries you pick, scenic hay wagon rides around the farm, and access to their hay pyramid and evergreen maze. The ticket specifies a check-in time, providing a 30-minute window for your arrival. You’ll have ample time to enjoy all the farm’s activities.

Donaldson Farm

Also, about an hour away, this strawberry-picking farm offers a variety of pick-your-own options, including strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, providing a little something for everyone. It’s an excellent choice for larger families as there are no entry fees; you only pay for the berries by the pound. However, you should call their business number at 908-852-9122 (x3) for precise pricing and to check the latest crop and picking conditions. Please note that dogs are not allowed on the farm.

Strawberry Picking begins early June 

A breezy 45-minute drive from Jersey City, this family-owned and operated strawberry farm is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm. They have a few different strawberry varieties, which include: Cabot, Chandler, Daroyal, Darselect, Mayflower, Rutgers Scarlet, Sunset, and Wendy, which makes it fun for the family to taste test each variety of strawberry to compare and decide which kinds are liked best. Lee Turkey Farm

Lee Turkey Farm is much more than just a place to get your farm fresh turkeys. They also have pick-your-own fruits and veggies, including delicious and juicy strawberries. Before entering their fields and orchards, you must be a member of the Lee Turkey Farm ‘Pick Your Own Club’.

Melick’s Town Farm

East of Jersey City and an excellent strawberry picking farm around Jersey City, NJ, Melick’s Town Farm offers some of the best strawberry pickings in New Jersey. This family-owned farm has been operating for 300 years, so they know a thing or two about growing some delicious fruits and veggies. They also sell plants, shrubs, jams and jellies, baked goods, gifts, and even Christmas trees—all the products that people have come to rely on from the Melick family since about 1725. Reservations are available the day prior at approximately 4:00 and are needed for everyone two years and up. Please, no pets at the farm.

Peterson Farm

Strawberry Picking opens first week of June 

Peterson Farm is now offering pick-your-own strawberries. The farm only takes cash or check, so make sure you have before heading out to this farm with the family. This farm is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).

Wightman Farms

Strawberry Picking sometime in June when the strawberries let them know they are ready. 

Stop by Wightman Farms to pick your strawberries. The entry fee grants you access to the picking area based on the season. You must pay for what you pick, and you get a reusable tote.

Ort Farms

Fun for all ages! PYO is a great opportunity to see first hand how your food is grown, and have a wonderful time while doing it. Search for the brightest berry in the field, take a walk through the sunflower trail, or take home the biggest pumpkin in the patch!
