I wanted to post this for the store down the block from me on Sussex Street. I LOVE her stuff and it is so meaningful. She takes your children’s fingerprints and makes it into jewelry. She does it for pets too.

My son was the first student at the downtown Smart Start location when they first opened.. We had many ups and downs with the school throughout the year he was there.. Given they were brand new to the neighborhood we didn’t have much info to go on when we were first looking, and there weren’t many great options. In summary, they market very well, have good facilities and care about your children, however there is very limited developmental opportunities and a lot of considerations to be had once they start, which I’ve laid out below. I hope this review is seen as insightful for folks that need a comprehensive assessment of the school from a parents perspective.
PROs
– Mostly safe
– Clean facility
– Extremely flexible hours, and accommodating if you need to pick-up in the middle of the day those few times you need that open.
– Great location near the Path
– Staff is always very friendly
– Pricing is very competitive with the neighborhood
– Many trips around the neighborhood
CONS
– Our child was in an accident with one of the pieces of furniture and they didn’t change anything after the first time, and the same accident happened again, which they then added additional safety for that piece of furniture.. They gave us the reason of it being ‘NJ certified’ furniture as to why they didn’t want to change it after it was shown to be dangerous the first time after the injury..
– Poor communication, resulting in delayed responses and making it difficult to plan accordingly.
– There are an excessive amount of days off that are taken by the school, especially compared to other options.
– There is a very large turnover of staff and only a few main staff members actually stay on for an extended period of time
– Very cheap financially. We gave a month and a half notice that we were going to change schools, and because we didn’t technically give them 2 months notice as per their policy, even though they could easily backfill the role, they still held on to our deposit.
– The staff if paid poorly (which we learned from one of them who is now a waitress at a restaurant in the neighborhood) and when they’re closed they say it’s for staff training, but they do not get paid for the time they are closed
– There is a very weak program for the children when they hit age of 2. There is very little for the child to do to still develop
– Parent / Teacher session was not very informative and only told us things we already knew. We stopped going after the 1st.
– No focus on potty training
– For the waddlers in the back, there is no natural sun that comes in the rooms
– Extremely small open space in the back

Hello All, we are moving from Jersey City to suburbs last week of December and I would highly recommend our nanny Miriam Caceres to anyone who is looking for a full time nanny. She has been with us for 31/2 years, a second mother to my 6-8 years old , extremely dependable, super patient and loving. I and our kids dote on her. She is super efficient around the house, keeps the place clean everyday, does kids laundry and cooks food for kids whenever requested. She has kept us sane, especially with my work schedule. Northern Soul over by the Sky Club is also pretty close to Jersey City the Heights, I’m pretty sure they’re doing an event as well.
Hoboken hospital and their maternity ward should be SHUT DOWN. The experience described was no where near what I had. I learned about the pampered pregnancy program and spoke with the representatives at various baby fairs in the area and believe me it was not at all pampered. I felt like I was a prisoner in a third world country. In general, the nurses were not very supportive, pushed me for a C-section (after I was told that the head nurse wanted to make it for a BBQ lunch they were having on that day), left me on an uncomfortable and painful gurney approximately 5 hours, did not allow me to see my baby for about 6.5 hours, refused to give me medication, and when questioned, indicated I would have to remember to ask for my medication. They made it an ordeal to take me to breastfeed my baby and were all around unprofessional. I was told that I should have been left on the gurney to make it easier to be wheeled to the NICU due to difficulty accessing the unit and then asked if I could use the wheelchair hours after a forced unnecessary C-section. I was bullied by hospital staff and surrounded by a entire team who could not provide me a reason for C-section with the exception that it had been over 6 hours since my admission and that was what hospital policy allows. In addition, when I asked to lower the amount of epidural because I felt numb on one side, the anesthesiologist seemed annoyed and said, “I’m not doing this again” if I needed the levels to be changed again. I could not wait to leave there! No gourmet meals, robes, or candles. The hospital has less than a 10% breastfeeding rate and the nurses I had the pleasure of dealing with did not understand English, therefore there was a language barrier as well. If that’s not enough, I refused to get a vaccine for my baby, stating I would have my pediatrician do it, and was told they did it anyway and to sign the form. The pediatrician who cleared my baby appeared so inept that he couldn’t put a diaper on and handed my baby back to me without a diaper on. I’ve heard the hospital is in bad shape and the staff they hire is at most subpar and had significant issues with their maternity ward. They are trying to re-introduce themselves as baby-friendly and a “great” place to birth by allowing midwives privileges, however they lack the necessary training and have not changed their hospital policies to provide women the choices they are entitled to when it comes to birth. This place is unsupportive, unprofessional, and the most traumatic experience ever. Furthermore, while I was there the maternity ward was a like a ghost-town. Their were only three other women in the entire ward. Please, if you don’t want to face such trauma, do your research and DO NOT GO TO THIS HOSPITAL!!! I’ve birthed before and this is the worst place possible. Oh and the hospital bill….WOW! They got more from my insurance company than places in the city billed!

We are hoping to find a new family for our amazing nanny, Melissa, who lives in Jersey Coty. Melissa has been with us for almost two years, since shortly after the birth of our second child. Our kids absolutely love her, and she them. She is warm, loving and kind, and is a joy to have in our home. She really takes time to get to know the kids and engage with them around their interests, and also support their development, for example, teaching our little one colors, counting, and letters. In addition to caring and cooking for our children, Melissa also regularly cleans our apartment and does the whole family’s laundry. She has truly been a godsend for us! Since the stay-at-home orders began, she has been especially helpful to us as we both try to work from home, keeping the kids out of our hair, helping with distance learning, and saving us from drowning under piles of dishes and laundry.
We had hoped to keep her on through the summer and then part-time once both boys are (hopefully!) in school in the fall, but due to a change in our circumstances, we are unable to keep her on past June. Melissa lives in Jersey City, NJ. She has been practicing strict social distancing in her own life, and is diligent in making sure our children are doing the same when she takes them outside. She even made masks for our kids!

We were very disappointed with this school and took our child out. They used to have trouble retaining students at the middle school level due to other choices but are now having trouble retaining lower grade students as well. We know MANY other families who also pulled their kids out. Be sure to do your research before choosing this school! (and don’t just go by online reviews that are often probably planted).

I lost confidence in this article after the author compared Hamilton park, which I live adjacent to, to central park. Hands down no comparison.
You are right no comparison. Hamilton Park is so clean, safe, even at night, family friendly but great for friends to hang out in without worrying about crazy people or homeless attacking them. Same goes for beautiful Van Vorst park and who can forget our huge state park Liberty State Park. People can jog at night without being attacked. So definitely no comparison to NYC Central Park. 😉
That article has left a few things out. Most of what was written is just a quick look into the city. Jersey City Is Not that safe. Be on guard of the area you pick to live in. It’s Expensive, plagued with rodents, buildings cramped together and the parking is hirendous! There is never any parking. Instead consider small towns in a few cities over. Elizabeth, Rahway, Islin, Colonia and they all have access to NY via train, bus, or a ride share. Sorry… but I know 1st hand. Born and raised there. I love my city but it is what it is.
Yes I had a realtor show me around in the day tome,time, we moved in I said I eant my money back. It’s a lot of Dope Feins Crackheads Drug dealers and Mental health issues is really high. The schools are rated 3or 4 which is super low and it by zip code. Schools sounded like Zoos. I live in Jersey City my kids Go to school in NyC, when I got my children tested to move in JC schools they both was 2 years advanced. The systems out her are slow .No updated DMV systems,The Human Resources Administration has Carbon 3 sheets of paper per interviews. Not done like NyC tho it’s like it’s the early 90s out here.Now I don’t under stand why the systems are so slow and we are that close to NYC. The path train you can not use your phone to go or your card the systems are not upgraded ?hmm

Oh and it’s no programs out here they don’t have the funding like NYC so of you work in NYC and make over 22 hrs you can win in JC tho if you on benefits and working stay in NyC the housing court out here is 7 days and if you don’t have the money u have to MOVE e. Housing Court is not how NYC and its programs. It’s what they call Hot Shit out here. I say look and visit at night time.Book a hotel stay and move around as if you just moved. Are the ppl in the are friendly with out ment health issues.Trust me you rather just stick with NYC. Take care and God Bless Us All
Be careful what you read in article that says JC is a great place to live, you need to do your own research about a place to live, JC is getting expensive just like NYC they want the same prices for people to pay like in NY the rent laws are different in New Jersey, as well as taxes you have to pay if you want buy property. The public schools you have to research for your children what best for them as well, JUST BEWARE what you get yourself into.
